Don't watch the live-action Speed Racer trailer if you've already dipped into your evening cocktail.

But by all means do watch it at some point.

I Hate Quicktime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never properly plays the video, unless, of course, I want to pay for Quicktime Pro. Not!
Love or hate MSF, WMP always shows the video or whatever.

May? I gotta wait till MAY?!?!?!
Well, at least there is Sweeney Todd to tide me over...

I can't get Quicktime to play it either. It claims it needs software, I give it the okay to get the software, and then the POS only plays the audio. Par for the Quicktime course.

RE: Troubles?

What sort of machines are you guys using? What OS?

I had no problems. But then again, I drive a Mac. I've known Windows driven platforms don't 'play well' with other [competetive] software packages, e.g., Adobe products, for the most part, but also Apple Mail comes across screwy as hades on Windows software.

I would not be surprised to hear that Windows does things that make it difficult for their users to see things properly.

I had such an encounter with Windows myself back when I worked for USWest.

I had a problem with Excel that I was looking for a solution to on the Microsoft web-site's 'Naugh[t]ledge-Base', emphasis on 'base'.

Couldn't read the results of my search.

So I called their tech support people.

Told them my problem.

They asked me what browser I was using.

I told them the corporate browser was Netscape. [Note: This was mid-90s.]

Microsoft Tech Spt told me that if I were using THEIR product, I wouldn't have this sort of problem.

I'd call that a 'key indicator'.

Nah, its quicktime that's the problem. No other multimedia codec causes issues on my boxes except quicktime.
Loading a corrupted video in quicktime once made my box bluescreen the only time it ever happened in two years.

P.S. I've been running on Apple machines for 27 years.

I've had no such problems as you and Mike and Phill report with QuickTime. Nor with Adobe products.

However, I know a LOT of people driving MS-based systems that have all kinds of problems with third party applications.

Chuck(le), Chuck(le), Chuck(le)...

I'm only too glad to admit that OS X is an excellent platform, and is much more secure than Windows. But why gild the lily? I'm sure I could find examples of aggravated issues with Macs compared to Wintel. ;)

But to the point. I run WinXP (SP2, natch) and have installed QT 7.1 on my system, and it works fine.

Actually the biggest problem I have with multimedia is that Mozilla 1.7.13 has infrequent (but regular) issues with playing online content. Usually .wma content, for the "Windows is better" crowd. Heh. In every case Firebird 2.x has run the same content flawlessly.

Hmmm. One wonders if the above folks are using IE, instead of a real browser? {ducking and running for cover}

Ay gevalt! I clicked the vid, it played perfectly the first time. At least the HD one did. I didn't try the non-high-def version.

Talk about HD Eye Candy of the hallucinogenic kind. Very cool.

I still HATE APPLE/QUICKTIME.
Did watch the "trailer" however, cool CGI but what I could gather from the story would seem less interesting than the last iteration of the cartoon.
How, you ask, did I finally view?
Last downloaded Quicktime four years ago or so, when purchased current computer. Checked auto-update and occasionally clicked on "up-date" software, logically believing Apple would keep me up-to-date.
But, noo, I have to go to the website to stay current and insure I don't get stuck with any of the iPod/iTunes crap or accidently buy "Pro".
Said swamp being successfuly negotiated.
Casey, thank you for alerting me to the fact Quicktime was 7.?, no longer 6.?, all runs fine on XP SP2 and IE7.

One wonders if they're using (shudder) Vista?

If I have to buy a new machine just to run a new OS, I swear to God I'm going to get a Mac, unless I can build a decent AMD machine real cheap. And even then I'm sticking with XP.

...And I might add there's a fair number of G4 Macs showing up on eBay with fairly low prices. The only reason I don't snap one up is that I would really, really like to get an Intel Mac so's I can run Parallels; I can't afford to buy Mac versions of several apps right now.

Chuck, how well does OS 10.4.x run on G4s with 256Mb-512Mb memory? How CPU dependent is it? The most CPU-intensive stuff I do is (generally) ripping DVDs, converting .avi or .mpeg files to DVD format, or backing data up to DVD/RW. That and watching movies. :)

"...how well does OS 10.4.x run on G4s with 256Mb-512Mb memory?" -- Casey Tompkins

Can't say from personal experience. All of my machines have 1GB of RAM.

"How CPU dependent is it? The most CPU-intensive stuff I do is (generally) ripping DVDs, converting .avi or .mpeg files to DVD format, or backing data up to DVD/RW. That and watching movies." -- Casey Tompkins

I've got machines I've been running on every OS since 10.2.x. The machines have been procured over the years since 2001. They've all been running fine on each of the iterations of Mac OS X....so far.

I do a considerable amount of DVD burning myself. Mostly old VHS tapes to DVD format.

It's not as fast as I understand Windows does it. But I stick to the Mac iMovie/iDVD environment and I understand that translation from one protocol to another is a bear.

Hope that helps.

Platform a four year old Dell with a little 2.1 Ghz Intel chip and 512 RAM. Running XP SP2 & IE7
Remains sufficient for my needs.
Thanks for asking.

Okay.

Anyone else using that sort of system that has problems with running QuickTime?

I'd suggest that maybe that is not quite accurate....

RE: Stability on Macs

"if you're really worried about stability on your mac, just install solaris and be done." -- miah

I've been running on Apple systems for 27 years now. Macs for 17.

I've had little, if any, trouble with system stability. That includes a stint with USWest running their White Pages Computer Lab between 1995 and 2003; 12 Macs running 24/7/365 cranking out all the white pages for all telephone directories in the western third of these here United States, less California and Nevada, which are PacBell turf.

The only 'regular' instability was when some bozo with a backhoe cut through a power cable while they were constructing Park Meadows shopping center, across I-25 from our offices in Inverness.

Then, we'd only lose a large-screen monitor.

Hope that helps.

Chuck,
As I ealier commented, my problem was assuming Apple/Quicktime would actually "auto-update", or at least update when I'd go to the help menu's update now.
Wrong!
I seem to have to go to Apple/Quicktime's website to get new.
So, my little Dell Dimension is truly sufficient while Quicktime auto-update is insufficient.
BTW, I downloaded WMP 11 some time ago and removed two weeks later, returning to 10

Mine does.

Again, another 'indicator' that MS doesn't play well with other company products.
