Mugged by Reality
Posted by Stephen Green  ·  16 October 2007

Ouch:

Randi Rhodes was mugged on Sunday night on 39th Street and Park Ave, nearby her Manhattan apartment, while she was walking her dog Simon.

According to Air America Radio late night host Jon Elliott, Rhodes was beaten up pretty badly, losing several teeth and will probably be off the air for at least the rest of the week. At of late Monday night we have not able to locate any press accounts of the attack and nothing has been posted on the AAR website.

I know this is hardly the time for cruel honesty, immediately after a brutal assault. But when you work for Air America, muggers are going to pretty much assume that you walk around unarmed.

UPDATE: Not mugged, after all.

FURTHER UPDATE: Welcome, "Sadly, No!" readers. Just to clarify, the victim -- if any -- is never asking for it. But it's sure nice when they have a fighting chance at fighting back, no?

Cruel Honesty indeed:

According to the NYDailyNews, Rhoades wasn't even mugged

Methinks you're a little *too* much into politics -- you heard about someone getting mugged and thought, "how can I make this into a political lesson?" I'm generally disposed toward gun rights, actually, but not every crime is a potential American Rifleman mugging story -- and I don't want to live in a society where I expect everyone walking down the street is armed. A society like that is less like Boise and more like Baghdad.

All of this is waaay beyond moot as far as Randi Rhodes is concerned, but this just shows plain bad instincts.

Wow, you are scum, buddy. I hope none of the girls in your family are ever violently attacked.

TME,

Perhaps you're right. But I do hope you weren't expecting temperate commentary at a blog called VodkaPundit.

Although I am, generally, at least a bit more pleasant than the folks at Sadly, No.

Posted by: Stephen Green at October 16, 2007 01:43 PM

Stephen,

What would a mugger think if he ran into this all alone in a dark park?

"This insurance salesman will be easy..."

Double-breased and cufflinked? Cufflinks are still in. But is that from 1998?

Posted by: Dhalgren at October 16, 2007 01:53 PM

Actually, from about '96, I think. I'd lost just enough weight (hyperthyroid, no biggie) at that point, that I had one suit left that fit.

Unfortunately, I came back up three sizes instead of just two. The real Bateman would be most disappointed.

I realize this place is called "Vodka Pundit" but perhaps you shouldn't post after drinking, it makes you come off like an asshole.

that's funny, because I never see them tossing off a post attacking someone who's been hurt within seconds of hearing about it, just to make a very stupid political point.

but maybe "pleasant" means something different around here.

Posted by: Kathleen at October 16, 2007 02:35 PM

So are you saying that Rhoads could have fought back? Or she should have? And what if she didn't, is it her fault just the same?

Or it's her fault for walking alone in NYC?

Love that empathy and compassion of yours. You can't just leave it at this being a bad thing that happened to someone who didn't deserve it, you had to get your little smarmy parting shot in about her fighting back.

Real class act you are.

To point out, as I did, that "when you work at Air America" you're likely to be unarmed isn't just funny, it's true.

It's also crimebait.

I'm of the opinion, however, that it's better when the victim has the chance to turn the tables on the attacker. I'm funny that way, too.

But I swear, the next time Rhodes isn't attacked, I'll keep the bad gags to myself.

In the meantime, just breathe a sigh of relief that Randi wasn't attacked by anything worse than an off-the-cuff blogger.

Ha ha, SO funny! Wow, where did you develop such an amazing sense of humour and wit? I am still laughing at it, ha ha ha SO FUNNY.

How many times have you fended off getting jumped by yourself at night?

What a fucking dickhead you are.

"Fend off"? That's what he's paying for!

Posted by: dave at October 16, 2007 03:09 PM

Do you really think that many muggers listen to Air America?

Posted by: MrWonderful at October 16, 2007 03:34 PM

If you define a mugger as a "freelance socialist," then, yeah, sure.

Not really, of course. No one listens to Air America.

Ignoring away for a moment the world-class retardation it takes to think that one can know anything at all like Green thinks he knows here based on where someone is employed, and ignoring further for a moment the additional stupidity it takes to imagine that a mugger knows by looking at someone where they are employed and what that says about their likelihood of defending themselves . . . are to then assume that Green is so bereft of imagination that he's never heard of mace or pepper spray, neither of which I imagine even the most fervent leftist, let alone Randi Rhodes, has any objection to?

Posted by: Phil at October 16, 2007 05:08 PM

This is certainly enlightening.

How did the Democrat party become a refuge for the load mouthed, knuckle dragging, mouth breathers?

(Not that there is anything wrong with that).

I almost feel guilty for making fun of Ron Paul supporters. Almost.

God forbid they ever join forces.

Ross Perot anyone?

Posted by: jaymaster at October 16, 2007 08:04 PM

Simply put: Since reports (with details) of Rhodes' non-existant mugging complete with declarations of who is responsible *will not* result in any sort of apologies whatsoever toward those who were slandered... Mr. Green has provided a service... can't accuse the conservative hate machine of orchestrating a mugging? Too bad. But you can still get a libertarian for being rude!

(I will take Steve to task on a factual matter, however. As we've seen many times, the loudest control advocates *often* make exceptions for themselves. Assuming an employee of Air America is unarmed would be foolish.)

Posted by: Synova at October 16, 2007 09:23 PM

Wow, what a prick you are. I'm just amazed at the general prickiness of the entire right-wing. It's like you all have some sort of mental illness or something.

Posted by: Peanutcat at October 17, 2007 09:17 AM

Wow.

So, just to clarify.

Randi Rhodes trips (or maybe is mugged or maybe is not).

Good politicized comment: Fellow Air America commentor immediately accuses conservatives of stalking her, possibly targeting her.

Bad politicized comment: Observing that if she were armed, perhaps the muggers might've had second thoughts.

Of course, as it turns out (or not), she wasn't actually mugged. Which the "right," i.e., Left, commentors ignore, b/c, well, it's the narrative, not the facts that matter.

Just. Wow.

Posted by: Lurking Observer at October 18, 2007 04:13 PM

Lurking Observer, dont forget that it wasnt just a Bad politicized comment, but will also become a Smear, and a Swiftboating. Then the good left will mail a dead cat to Stephen. You know, to show how superior they are. Cause thats the way they roll.

How did the SoSadlySad, Yes anti-Americanists get to be so stupid?

I guess the Soros monies can buy all the used up drug addict parents and their offspring of the 70s and 60s it needs to create a totally ignorant gaggle of GOMERS.
