Upper back pain sucks. In fact, I probably shouldn't be at the computer right now. In fact, I think I'll take my Percocet and pass out.
Condolences. I've had low back pain for the past 60 years. Two back surgeries, and still some back pain associated with arthritis. You bet your butt it sucks.
Ug.. feel better. If you don't have a chiropractor - find one! A good chiro can be like a frigging miracle!
Muscular or nerve related? There's nothing like a hot bath with some kind of salts in the water. The peppermint kind is nice and soothing. Trust me, you don't check in the Man Card by taking a hot bath when needed. It's like taking a spritz, only you're the only naked guy in the room.
That and then some easy stretches can help.
Don't forget, alcohol is a muscle relaxant!
Yuck, percocet.
Six years ago, I had a wisdom tooth removed. I was given a prescription for percocet for the resulting pain.
I took one that night and had such vivid technicolor nightmares, including a psycodellic armadillo (long before Jeff ever dreamed one up) that I decided to deal with the pain and forego the percocet.
They're still on the shelf in the medicine cabinet. Vodka is much better and safer.
I recently had a seriously infected cyst on my tailbone, bad enough to wind up in the emergency room in the middle of the night getting cut open. It was a whole new kind of pain, let me tell you. The doctor used nitrous oxide during the cutting which didn't so much kill the pain as it made me laugh my ass off (no pun intended) through the whole thing.
During the week that follow I was on two percocet every 4 hours. I don't remember much of that week.
I too recommend a Chiropractor. Was a skeptic at first, when my wife introduced me to the methods about 15 yrs ago. I'm only half skeptic now, but each time they have fixed me up. It appears to work.
Find one that just does the bone manipulations/corrections...and not the herbs and oils. They should do an xray before they get started with any corrections.
Think of it as someone clicking the default button for your skeleton - putting your bones back in the proper place. When the bones are not lined up, other muscles have to overcompensate (strain) and the nerves can pinch.
Hope your feeling better.

...and Venomous Kate?
First it was mutually sympathetic web hosting service problems.
Now it's BACK problems at the same time?
Your wife is going to start getting suspicious.

P.S. Get well soon....
Hey! Get Well dammit! Then do some blogging! Interesting things are happenning out there.
About the back. Been there done that. You could rally add an "interesting" perspective if you were to just blog anyway. Painkillers could provide some new and interesting insights.
Get Well Soon.
I tell ya...
the boy is "always down with something".
Maybe he has a 20 foot tapeworm as well.

I don't know if this will help, but if the pain goes from the base of your neck to in between your shoulder blades and burns as well as hurts, you may have your monitor to high. If that is the pain you are having lower the monitor so that you are looking slightly downwards when sitting at the computer. It has helped me and many of my coworkers.
If it is another type of pain, well, I agree with some of your commenters: have a drink. Or two.
