Some people think the armed forces are for people of lesser intelligence. Oh, really: I majored in international relations, and minored in Arabic at the Virginia Military Institute. I studied abroad at the American Language Institute in Fez, Morocco, where I lived in an old medina with an Arab family. I took Arabic at VMI until they ran out of classes, and then had to press the higher-ups to invent more classes so I could continue my studies. I attended multiple “model Arab League” conferences in DC, had frequent conversations and classes with the mid east area professors at my school, and wrote (and still write) frequently on the subject. That's United States Army officer Charlie Munn of The Officers' Club, who also says, "I'm not arrogant enough to claim that I'm a 'Middle East Expert.'" Three things for you. First, read Charlie's entire post. Second, be gratefully aware that someone with his intelligence, dedication, and humility has dedicated his youth to serving your country. Third, feel free to sneer at anyone who holds our armed forces in even the slightest contempt. Comments
He IS however arrogant enough to think that he can beat me in Halo. And this comes after many late night schoolings up in VMI's cadet newspaper office. Posted by: John Noonan at February 9, 2006 11:07 PMJohn, You know what I said about FPS games - the trash talk is *mandatory*. So, have you been kicking Charlie's ass, or what? 'Cause I'd love to stop praising at least one of you guys for a change, and do a little trash talking myself. Posted by: Stephen Green at February 9, 2006 11:13 PMDomination. Charlie has a bad habit of leaning foward in intense concentration when playing halo, then...usually after I've given him the business end of my shotgun....he'll kind of throw himself deep into the back of his chair/coach whatever and sigh deeply. Go ahead and ask him. Me playing him in Halo is like Mike Tyson beating an 8 year old girl in the boxing ring or an eight year old girl beating Mike Tyson in a spelling bee. Posted by: John Noonan at February 9, 2006 11:26 PM"Third, feel free to sneer at anyone who holds our armed forces in even the slightest contempt." the entire Democrat party? that's a lot of sneering, but I will try! Posted by: E-HO at February 10, 2006 06:05 AMThanks for this mention of that post. I'm sick of my teachers telling me I should do something 'more intellectual' after high school than the armed forces-- partying at a civilian college, for example. It's nice to see someone point out that doing that isn't a 'dumb' choice. Posted by: Serenity at February 10, 2006 09:31 AMI followed the link, my harddrive is soaking in clorox right now. Oliver Wendell Holmes said about his time in the Union Army that he realized that there were men out there that in normal times, he would look down on as an educated upper caste Bostonian.Yet in the army they were in many ways better men than he. The "military are morons" crew fear that this is true, and they are right. For what its worth its pretty hard to become a senior NCO without a Masters Degree and darn near impossible to do it without a Bachelors. Posted by: monkeyboy at February 10, 2006 10:53 AMIn the 50', the Army paid for my father's law degree, a Wharton MBA, and a pol-sci master at the Univ. of Va. ...And he was just a captain. Most generals today a Ph.d's. Posted by: Ted B. at Charging Rhino at February 10, 2006 12:27 PMHere's a choice quote from that article you linked to, "I could beat up every single kid in this photograph. At the same time, even." It's so revealing on so many levels; 1)an appreciation of our history and for those who in the past have laid down their lives so he could have the right to publish that with impunity. 2)the intellectual depth of the writer. He strikes me as a maladjusted arrested adolescent so insecure that he resorts to schoolyard bravado assisted by the safety of the internet no less. 3) Stereotypes so tired even the Kos kids have quit using them. I feel sorry for him. Posted by: Tim P at February 10, 2006 02:28 PM--> Serenity at February 10, 2006 09:31 AM: Don't be sick, leave that to us. Be sure. Be sure of yourself, and your calling. We'll take care of the 'being sick.' It's the least we can do for those that seek out military service in this culture. The sad and ironic thing is that you are lightyears ahead of your teachers in terms of decision-making and reason. Godspeed to you and God help the rest. Posted by: adamthemad at February 11, 2006 12:39 AMGood God, I had to boil my eyes in Lysol after going through that post you linked. Urk.
