Is Anybody Listening?
Posted by Stephen Green  ·  20 October 2005

Well, they aren't listening to Air America in our nation's capital:

Air America, the liberal talk network carried on WWRC-AM (1260), went from bad to nonexistent. After WWRC recorded a mere fraction of a rating point in the spring with syndicated shows from the likes of lefty talkers Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo and Stephanie Miller, Arbitron couldn't detect a measurable listenership for the station this time around.

If I had to take a shot every time a national radio network couldn't muster "a measurable listernership," I'd have to rename my blog "SodaPundit."

Nobody is listening to Air America in D.C.? Not even the pointed headed, left-leaning State Department milk-sops?

Well, I'll drink to that!

Actualy, be careful about gloating too much. As one of our local talk guys says here, we should all be hoping that Air-America stays viable. If it folds, how long do you think it would take before Dem politicos attempt to reintruduce the "fairness doctrine", or use McCain-Feingold to shut down talk radio.

It is remarkable how poorly they're doing even in the liberal bastions. Remember last year when they bragged that they narrowly beat Rush Limbaugh in New York City?

Far left radio just barely beat far right radio in New York City. That's like me just barely beating a pool of water in a popularity contest with my cats.

And they bragged about it!!

New York isn't exactly a liberal bastion, especially not in the radio market. There was no liberal talk here of significance before Air Hindenburg showed up. The fact that they managed to beat out Rush in the NYC market was significant-- it's the largest radio market in the country.

However, what they didn't tell you is that they got that chunk of market the old fashioned way: They bought it. Air Whine flat out plastered New York with advertising on their launch, and had the MSM doing the usual circle jerk for them as well.

It lasted for about a month. These days there isn't an Air Morons ad to be found, and their market share here and elsewhere reflects that. The flash in the pan they had was exactly that, though blowing through enough money to make a dot bomb investor blush didn't exactly help.

I believe they're down to half a floor at 3 Park Ave these days. They previously had three floors or so. I'll be amazed if they manage to keep the lights on for another year.

Let me put it this way: If you can't hear the radio station, then the radio station and radio show aren't going to get a good rating point.
Don't become part of the noise machine on this one.
If you use lousy gin, that doesn't mean martinis taste bad.

Mr. Lion: New York City isn't a liberal bastion? You must be referring to a different New York City then the one I live in.

Our Republicans are more liberal then most places' Democrats.

As it turned out, Al Franken's claim that he beat Rush Limbaugh in the New York market was bogus -- WLIB had a slight lead in one of the target demographics in the summer 2004 book, but the cume for all listeners for WLIB and Limbaugh's WABC showed the latter with just about double the ratings that Air America was pulling in.

Even though WABC's radings have dropped in 2005, due to the end of the 2004 election cycle, the numbers for WLIB have dropped below those that the station was gatting prior to March of 2004, when they were playing Caribbean music.
