That Hurt
Posted by Stephen Green  ·  19 October 2005

Congratulations to the Houston Astros, for a well-deserved NLCS win. That goes double for Roy Oswalt, who pitched an almost perfect Game Six against my Cardinals. That said, here's to hoping that Houston gets smeared by the White Sox.

Bastards.

Tacky.

Posted by: Xixi at October 19, 2005 10:48 PM

I know, Xixi, and I'm sorry.

But I'm in a little bit of pain right now.

Sigh.

Posted by: Stephen Green at October 19, 2005 11:08 PM

What IS it with St. Louis teams, anyway? They can rock the entire season, but when it comes down to the wire, they always choke. Hmph.

Posted by: John S. at October 19, 2005 11:19 PM

When everyone was talking about the Cards' momentum coming into tonight's contest, all I could think of was Earl Weaver's old saw that momentum in baseball consisted of tonight's starting pitcher. Oswald proved that to be true yet again

Posted by: Will Allen at October 20, 2005 12:21 AM

You must live in the Chicago southside, because I don't think anyone who lives in a place other than the Chicago southside would actually root for the White Sox.

Posted by: Matt Brown at October 20, 2005 05:42 AM

I agree, Stephen. I agree...

Posted by: Greg at October 20, 2005 05:42 AM

Remember the words of the wise man who said, "It doesn't matter if you win or lose, until you lose."

Posted by: Austin Boland at October 20, 2005 05:48 AM

Good to see you're not bitter.

Posted by: Greg F. at October 20, 2005 07:33 AM

It would seem that this will be the year when nearly everyone watching the World Series will be partisan because they hate one team or the other. Does anyone actually love the Astros or the WhiteSox?

Posted by: Steven Den Beste at October 20, 2005 08:35 AM

May the Astros lose in 4.

Posted by: SMB at October 20, 2005 08:38 AM

Houston, we don't have a problem.

Posted by: Brad at October 20, 2005 09:13 AM

Does anyone actually love the Astros...

Down here in Houston they do, though I was rooting for the Cards. On Tuesday night, when they were down 4-2 on their last out, I got up from the couch, saying "I can't watch." Tried it again last night, didn't work.

Houston, we don't have a problem.
Headline in the today's Houston Chronicle, in a type size suitable for announcing the end of the world: "Houston, We Have a Pennant".

Posted by: Angie Schultz at October 20, 2005 09:22 AM

"What IS it with St. Louis teams, anyway? They can rock the entire season, but when it comes down to the wire, they always choke. Hmph."

That sounds like every Astros fan I've ever known. until last night anyway. :)

I'm not a big baseball fan, but hey, it's a Texas team. We might have reigning champs in two pro sports. Cool.

Posted by: Garrett at October 20, 2005 09:23 AM

"Does anyone actually love the Astros..."

I love them here San Francisco.

Of course it helps that I grew up in Houston.

Go 'stros!!!

(and will someone take Pelosi off our hands here in California? Sheesh)

Posted by: Henry at October 20, 2005 10:38 AM

Sweet!!!

And the St. Louis fans were all class last night - standing O and chanting "Let's go Astros"

I know the pain you must be feeling - it was almost unbearable until Oswalt took the mound last night.

We'll try to do the NL proud.

Go Stros!!!!

Posted by: James at October 20, 2005 11:03 AM

ASTROS!

WOOO!

Posted by: Will Franklin at October 20, 2005 11:11 AM

Finally, somebody as bitter as I am.

Posted by: DanUpBaby at October 20, 2005 11:15 AM

James,

The AP reported that the chant was "Let's go Cardinals", but I distinctly heard them saying "...Astros" in the background.

Anyway...LET'S GO ASTROS!!!

No problem at all.

Posted by: me at October 20, 2005 11:16 AM

Yeah. Boo freakin' hoo for St. Loser. Their dump of a stadium. Their CF who slows down on fly balls so that he can make a dramatic catch (nice play -- keep ypur eye on the ball is a T-ball lesson, no?).

Oh. And let's not forget their classy fans who booed the new NL champs off the field. Nothing like being gracious in defeat.

I'm not cheering for either Houston or the team 8.1 miles south of Wrigley, but thank god Tony LaRooosa is gawne.

Posted by: Chuck at October 20, 2005 11:27 AM

You must live in the Chicago southside, because I don't think anyone who lives in a place other than the Chicago southside would actually root for the White Sox.

Hey I live in Colorado and I love the Sox!

Posted by: artboy at October 20, 2005 11:48 AM

Get a clue Chuck... after it set in the crowd remained standing and appluaded. I dont care if some yahoos booed, St Louis has the best fans of any sport anywher in the world. Period. Fact. Have you BEEN to the stadium? The last remaing bowl-type multi-purpose stadium was kept clean enough to eat off the concourse.

Why I am waisting my time with an a-hole like yourself is beyond me.

GO CARDINALS.

Posted by: Aaron Hood at October 20, 2005 12:09 PM

Oh, I've been there. I've seen the "best fans" up close and personal.

Had to take a 7 hour shower and use Ovide shampoo afterwards.

Posted by: Chuck at October 20, 2005 12:20 PM

What's so dislikeable about the Chisox or the Astros? I usually vote for the A.L., owing to allegiances built before the d.h., but I do warm to the notion of two lifers like Biggio and Bagwell getting a ring, and the prospect two home-town guys like Pettite and Clemons getting it done in Houston is kind of fun as well.

Posted by: Will Allen at October 20, 2005 12:47 PM

Houston in 6. Why? History.

2001 Champ - AZ Diamondbacks (NL Wild Card)
2002 Champ - CA Angels (AL Wild Card)
2003 Champ - FL Marlins (NL Wild Card)
2004 Champ - Boston Redsox (AL Wild Card)

Gotta be a Wild Card to win in the 21st Century.

Posted by: Chuck at October 20, 2005 12:53 PM

Correction. AZ was not a Wild Card team. An a-hole like myself regrets the error.

Posted by: Chuck at October 20, 2005 01:01 PM

@Den Beste:
The White Sox would have the temerity to go to the World Series the year I move out of town.

Grr...

Go White Sox, anyway. Even if my brother-in-law will probably go and I won't.

Posted by: eLarson at October 20, 2005 01:28 PM

Here's an article making the excellent point that a ChiSox win would be jabbing Oliver Stone's favorite dictator in the eye with a sharp stick:

"*DON'T* ease his pain."

Cordially...

Posted by: Rick at October 20, 2005 02:55 PM

Does anyone actually love the Astros or the WhiteSox?

I'm a life-long Astros fan. My dad has been a 'stros fan since he moved to Houston in the 1970s. After all these years of making the playoffs, being close, FINALLY!

GO ASTROS!

But I've got to say the most impressive player to me of the NLCS was Eckstein. That guy is just tenacious.

Posted by: Timothy at October 20, 2005 03:04 PM

Welcome to the PJ family!! {{hugs}}

Charles sure knows how to pick 'em.

Posted by: jheka at October 20, 2005 04:00 PM

Well, there you are on LGF, big as life, Stephen.

Posted by: Scott in CA at October 20, 2005 04:06 PM

StevenDB, SG -- I'm torn. I should root for the Astros because they're from Texas and that will piss off everyone around me in LA. On the other hand, the White Sox haven't gone all the way in a century and something there is in a middle-aged mick that cannot scorn the underdog...

Posted by: richard mcenroe at October 20, 2005 05:04 PM

Love the love my Sox are getting from you folks.. Same love we got all year and here we are kicking ass and taking names. Goodbye Houston, nice knowin' ya. I'll be sitting my butski in Comiscular Park on Saturday for Game 1 of the World Series and rooting for the team with the longest drought since those Bo-Sox from last year.

Posted by: Brian in Chicago at October 20, 2005 05:17 PM

Congrats Stephen, wonderful to have a Coloradan part of PajamasMedia!

Posted by: Pamela at October 20, 2005 05:54 PM

Xixi: Nonsense. That wasn't tacky. That was perfect. Honest admiration and partisan bitterness both tersely and elegantly expressed. This particular Houstonite (who, thanks to a lifetime spent as an Astros and Rangers fan, knows exactly what Stephen is feeling), never liked Stephen more than I do right now.

Stephen: Will buy you a drink sometime, dude. Perhaps to condole you after an Astros world championship.

Kenny

When the TV folks were talking about the end of Busch Stadium, they were showing old film clips and said "Who could forget game one of the '68 series?"...Answer--I could!! When I think of the '68 series, I think of GAMES FIVE, SIX, and SEVEN!!!! And MIckey Lolich!! And Cash, Kaline, Horton. Northrup, McAuliffe, Stanley, Wert, and Freehan!! And Lou Brock...getting picked off base!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! GO ASTROS!!!

Posted by: Don Blodgett at October 20, 2005 07:04 PM

Oh. And let's not forget their classy fans who booed the new NL champs off the field. Nothing like being gracious in defeat.

Huh. That's pretty much what this fella (second letter) said! I think he meant it differently, though.

Posted by: Angie Schultz at October 21, 2005 12:03 PM

"On the other hand, the White Sox haven't gone all the way in a century...."

Well, don't throw ballgames....

**************

The late NBC newsman and life long Cubs fan John Chancellor had a theorum which stated the team with more ex-Cubs on the roster was doomed to lose the WS. I first became aware of this when he stated it in a commentary on the eve of the 1986 Series, showing the rosters of the previous several WS participants and then pointing out that the Mets had no ex Cubs and the Sox (the true ones not the ChiSox) had one-Bill Buckner.
The ChancellorCubFactor has held true when applicable ever since.

The White Sox have no ex Cubs; the Astros have Jose Viscaino.

ChiSox in 6, 5 if Pettitte doesn't win G2.

However, there is little more revolting to a baseball fan than the thought of Jerry Reinsdorf hoisting the WS trophy.
