Can't Stop the Signal
Posted by Stephen Green  ·  27 September 2005

Went to the blogger screening of Serenity, and enjoyed it competely.

Does it help if you were a fan of the series? Probably. But don't let that stop you. In an engaging and clever first ten minutes, writer/director Joss Whedon introduces you to all the major characters, plus the spaceship Serenity.

I haven't seen a character-driven action picture this much fun since the last Indiana Jones movie, or maybe since the first Die Hard. Only instead of one or two heroes to cheer for, you get nine. And Chiwetel Ejiofor's "Operative" character is the best bad guy since Darth Vader. And I don't mean the whiny, petulent Vader from "Revenge of the Sith." I'm talking about "Empire Strikes Back" full bad-ass mode. And with just a touch of "Jedi" for good measure.

The rest of the cast from the series is back for the movie - although not all of them will be returning for the sequel.

And right now, I'm hoping dearly there will be one.

Comments

Damn. I guess that means they didn't change the ending since the spring previews.

Well, I'm still looking forward to seeing it (again) in a couple of days.

I personally can't believe that they had Kaylee and Summer and Anara in all those hot lesbian scenes.

(Or was that the movie that was playing in my head?)

Agreed - outstanding effort. If this show doesn't get back on the air, or in a series of films, then Hollywood delenda est.

I'm so looking forward to seeing this when it comes out. And I want to know who everyone had to sleep with to go see the screening of it! Cause I want to sleep with that person as well!!!

I had to sleep with my wife. That's not as easy as it sounds; she snores and steals the blankets.

There was a press pass signup for bloggers. We bloggers are a privileged lot, you know! We brought down Dan Rather!

Well, other bloggers did. I was busy with finals that week. But they were using very similar keyboards to mine! So I get partial credit.

Heh, I compared the operative to the big DV when I saw the preview a while ago.

Insightful comment made by Kaylee about battery's had me rolling.

Janye's response had me rolling.

I saw the preview yesterday asone of the blogger reviewers and loved it.

My wife, who is not a fan of Sci-Fi and had not watched Firefly, had no trouble understanding what was happening and wasn't lost at all.

Mind you she didn't expect it to be quite so startling. She did want more romance and sex in the movie but I'll place the blame for that on her marriage and Family therapist training.

They ARE all returning for sequels (and not in a creepy twin brother sort of way, to paraphrase Joss). Don't worry about that. He's a good writer, he'll figure a way to bring 'em all back.

I caught the first regular screening of Serenity in Australia, and I will admit, I was blown away. Of course, being a fan of Firefly, I went in there predisposed to like Serenity. But I was amazed at the quality of the characters: the Operative was remarkably well drawn for a villian, and the dialogue was everything we have come to expect from Joss Whedon.

Robert, you forgot about Gina Torres in that lesbian scene. She really made it all come together for me. Ahem...

As for Summer Glau, her two big scenes bring a new, sinister connotation to the word "Riverdance."

While I thought the movie was well done and well acted, I felt it to be a bit rushed and the ending a bit weak. All that effort just to broadcast some historical information about the Alliance screwing up and accidentally creating the Reavers (sic?). And they don't even show us the consequences.
