So much for moving to the center:

STATEMENT OF SENATOR HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON ON THE NOMINATION OF JUDGE JOHN G. ROBERTS TO BE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES Thu Sep 22 2005 18:54:45 ET

The nomination of Judge John Roberts to be Chief Justice of the United States is a matter of tremendous consequence for future generations of Americans. It requires thoughtful inquiry and debate, and I commend my colleagues on the Senate Judiciary Committee for their dedication to making sure that all questions were presented and that those outside of the Senate had the opportunity to make their voices heard. After serious and careful consideration of the Committee proceedings and Judge Roberts's writings, I believe I must vote against his confirmation. I do not believe that the Judge has presented his views with enough clarity and specificity for me to in good conscience cast a vote on his behalf.

Actually, I overstated the case. For the most part, only party die-hards care that much about Supreme Court nominees - and Hillary still has 18 months or so to tack back to the center.

"Chief Justice Roberts". She should practice saying it in a mirror to help get rid of the 'inspector dreyfus' tick in her face ...

She should have been tried to be nicer to the man who might be standing on the other side of the bible she holds as she takes her oath of office.

Long after the last volume in the memoirs for the "Queen of the wonks" has been written, then gone on to the remainder bin, then passing quietly into history "Chief Justice Roberts" and his life and impact will still take up volumes of actual history, rather than pages of People magazine that she will inhabit.

She has to show allegiance to the loony left. Her support from the MoveOn crowd is starting to slip, and she cannot afford that, as they are the money-bags of the Democratic Party.

My prediction is that all potential Dem candidates for president will oppose the Roberts nomination, and all red-state Dem senators running for re-election will support ir.

Keeping all her options open, not burning any bridges. No ideological objections that are likely to haunt her, but reassuring to her real base. She's a canny one.

Hillary. Hearing her name makes my stomach hurt. Hey! Wasn't she named for Sir Edmund Hilary, who was not publicly known until after she was born?? And wasn't she the one who made $100,000 on cattle futures without prior knowledge of that market? And wasn't she the same one who seemed to know nothing of some missing legal documents until they showed up in her residence? Didn't she embrace the concepts of Marx-the-devil with a version of nationalized health care industry? Didn't she just make a speech to the Black Caucus that tacitly accused the conservative citizens of the US of wholesale, racist murder?!
Why does anyone listen to anything she says?

Her support of the Minuteman Project last Spring has made her Dem Public Enemy #1 with MoveOn.org and the ACLU. They have been working hard to keep her from the 08 nomination; with some results. Before the Minuteman support, 50% of the Dems were going to vote for her with JFK a distant second at 12%. Last month she had fallen to only 40% and JFK had moved up to 16%. Still not happy the ACLU has been trying to bring the inventer of TCP/IP back to life. (That's EE talk for the internet for the non techies out there) Oh his name BTW is Al Gore
She needs to prove she is not some conservative "wingnut" to reestablish a commanding lead.

Last Spring I was temporarily dumfounded. Here was Bush taking a far left , ultra liberal position on the Minuteman Project ( he even went so far as to use the ACLU’s terminology –“vigilantes”). At the same time Hillary was taking the Regeanesque, conservative position and supporting the Minutemen. But then I remembered that in 64 she was a campaign worker for Goldwater. So for her to support conservative causes is not unheard of, just rare.

What really shocked me was how liberal Bush seemed to be. After his liberal bashing of the Minutemen AI was not at all surprised weeks ago when he spoke to the nation and announced a plan to enlarge the burden future taxpayers to “take care” of N.O.. Nor was I shocked when he referred to QUOTAS no less than five times. I think I voted for the new Jimmy Carter.

The ACLU has been on Hillary’s case the last few months. Cindy Shehan (sp) has also taken her to task for her conservative stances this year. I think MoveOn and the ACLU scare Hillary more that Cindy; but she has had the shot fired across he bow.

Maybe you didn't find much about him because he cleverly approched the senatorial jaws of death, much as you approached your Senate campaign -with a listening tour!

Apparently, you were unable to obtain (or misplaced) an FBI file on Roberts, at least one with a smoking gun in it!

Hillary comes out against freedom center

Posted by: Sissy Willis at September 24, 2005 12:51 PM

Note that alleged centrist Democrat Evan Bayh has announced he will vote against. Bayh is the very definition of a politician that goes whichever way the wind is blowing. If his primary consideration was getting elected in Indiana, he would have voted for Roberts. However, he hopes to be the "moderate" Democrat who can carry the middle. He was a terrible Governor (I admit I am biased) who happens to be handsome and has a pretty wife. But for his father's name to provide contacts and name recognition, he would never have been anything but a corporate attorney. Considering all of the abuse Dan Quayle received about his academic credentials, I wish someone would explore what Mr. Bayh's accomplishments have been.

Hillary's just preparing for the day when Roberts presides at her impeachment trial.

What, you think that hasn't crossed her mind?
