Quick Take
Posted by Stephen Green · 23 August 2005
Time magazine is already handicapping a hypothetical Clinton vs McCain presidential race. Elsewhere in the MSM, Newsweek asks the question: "Should Steve shoot himself in the kneecap, or shove a flat-head screwdriver into his right eye?" Comments
Clinton vs McCain? That race would be a media fantasy come true, and a nightmate for pretty much everyone else. Ick. Time to write 'Donald Duck' on the ballot... Posted by: rosignol at August 22, 2005 11:45 PMMcCain is not capable of winning the Republican nomination. It's a useful litmus test for a political journalist: ask them "how could John McCain get the Republican nomination?" Any answer other than "well, if he was the only Republican above the state precinct chairperson level who wasn't at the convention, and a meteor struck it...maybe he'd have a chance", and the journalist in question is just kidding themselves. Yeah, we hate him THAT much. Posted by: Robert at August 22, 2005 11:54 PMDon't forget everyone's perrinial favorite 3rd party candidate: meat tenderizer to the family jewels. Posted by: Seth Williams at August 23, 2005 03:43 AMI think they should be concentrating on a Clinton-McCain ticket - which is disgustingly more possible. They're both so desperate to get into the White House - I don't think they care if they have to do it together. It would be a 'MERGE' ticket - the worst of both worlds. A liberal and a RHINO. Remember, he's a MAVERICK! Posted by: Kathleen A at August 23, 2005 05:09 AMI have quit reading the Belgravia Dispatch as Greggie supports McCain. To be blunt and brief, John McCain has a tin ear when it comes to ethics, so he needs to write laws for him to obey so he can have the appearance of being ethical. Of course the fact that these laws destroys freedom is none of his concern. Posted by: David at August 23, 2005 06:16 AMGo with the screwdriver but first buy a black eye patch. Chicks dig the eye patch. Oh, and practice practice talking like a pirate. Posted by: Scott R at August 23, 2005 06:19 AMRemember that September 19 is talk like a pirate day. Posted by: David at August 23, 2005 07:07 AMHow about drink shooters and screwdrivers? Seems more like us... Posted by: andy at August 23, 2005 07:19 AMI'm sure Time's writers know McCain has almost no chance in a Republican primary, and won't run as an independent (Hillary, on the other hand, will almost certainly be the Democratic nominee if she runs). So why do they keep running stories like this? Posted by: Dave at August 23, 2005 07:24 AMDavid -- McCain doesn't even obey the laws he writes. Posted by: richard mcenroe at August 23, 2005 08:27 AM
For many years, I've been saying that McCain is the most dangerous person in the world because he alone can get Hillary elected. His massive ego encased in a pea brain would be flattered into responding to a media drumbeat for a third party with him at the head of the ticket, add Soros et al and unlimited funds and the same naifs who voted for Perot and McCain could well take us all into the deepest hell of another Clinton administration. Hey, how about we have a Clinton-McCain ticket running against a McCain-Clinton ticket. So far as I know there's nothing that prohibits this. Then Big Media can have a win-win situation no matter what happens! Posted by: charles austin at August 23, 2005 08:45 AMYou can always console yourself by contemplating a Clinton/Rice contest. (And imagining all the disgruntlement on the left: "The Republicans nominated a black woman?") Posted by: Steven Den Beste at August 23, 2005 08:49 AMStephen, there's no benefit to maiming yourself. It's the eyes and ears--the only safety lies in eliminating them both. Posted by: byrd at August 23, 2005 09:15 AMI vote for the kneecap. A facial self-injury is too extreme, considering how good looking you are (and I don't say that about other men with any regularity). Plus, you look like you could pull off both the "I coulda been sleepin' wit da fishes" thing and the "I coulda been a contenda" thing. Although I'm thinking your wife might be more inclined toward longer-lasting pity if it was the eye. Posted by: Lance at August 23, 2005 10:33 AMSounds like we need another Bush in the mix. Jebediah, come on down! That clever mix of Adolf Hitler and Daffy Duck, renowned author of Mein Quack. Rack 'em up, mow 'em down. Posted by: Austin Boland at August 23, 2005 11:47 AMDear God. If this happens I'm voting for Christopher Walken. Prior to their taking direct action? Or contracting someone to do it for them? Regards, Chuck(le) Posted by: Chuck Pelto at August 23, 2005 01:05 PMLady Hildemort vs. Johnny RINO? Time for another ballot choice... FOR PRESIDENT: Bill D. Cat If it's a choice between Hillary and McCain, it'll be the country that's handicapped... Posted by: richard mcenroe at August 23, 2005 05:56 PMThe media is focusing on McCain because they know that the two other options mean certain doom for the Dems (and Hillary in particular) - Rudy or Rice. Posted by: KG at August 23, 2005 07:28 PMI agree with Robert. McCain couldn't make it past the primaries. He is deeply loathed, as he deserves to be. Posted by: Bostonian at August 23, 2005 07:31 PMWOW Speaking as a republican (but not a Republican), if it comes to Jeb vs. Hillary, I'm-a votin' for Hillary. Two generations of one family is more than enough. Besides, there's something kinda nasty about voting for a politician you want to have sex with, so I might "go" for Hillary anyway. :) On the other hand -as erbo points out- we can always revive the Meadow Party: "Why not the worst?" Posted by: Casey Tompkins at August 23, 2005 10:15 PMTwo generations of one family is more than enough.
I'm not seeing the logic here.
Both parties should dump all candidates whose name we know, just to convince us that more than ten people out of 300 million are qualified for the job. Posted by: Brett at August 24, 2005 06:19 AMA #2 Phillips has long been the choice of masochists everywhere...where do these people get their information? The internet? Posted by: Don Bowles at August 24, 2005 08:45 AMTime's missing the boat- they need to handicap Sen. Clinton v. Sen Allen. There's no way that McCain's going to be the nominee- he's considered too liberal by the party's base (as incredible as that sounds). Posted by: kreiz at August 24, 2005 02:31 PMGo with the eye. Losing his right eye didn't hurt Swiss math genius Leonard Euler's career much. Posted by: Pigilito at August 25, 2005 05:59 AMWhat are they smokin at TIME? McCain's Bush attacking M/F law has earned him the animosity of all conservative and centrist GOP folk. He is not a serious candidate. Now Newt, Rudy or Dr. Rice - they are the ones to compare and contrast. Posted by: Rod Stanton at August 25, 2005 11:57 AM |
