William Rehnquist has reportedly just turned in his resignation letter. Despite our two-month long cool, rainy spell here in Colorado Springs, it's looking like a long, hot summer. Comments
Drudge has the big siren going on his site so it must be true ;) Seriously, if this really happens it presents Bush with some interesting opportunities. Add into the mix reports that Stevens and Ginsburg may resign by the end of the year (apparently more likely for Stevens than for Ginsburg) and we could be on the verge of a major reshuffling of the 3rd branch of government. Posted by: Doug at July 8, 2005 02:26 PMIt's quite expected, of course. Why delay the selection/appointment process any longer? And to the Denver weather...is it normally hot like that during the summer? I think I'll be making a move to Denver within the year and one major reason is to get away from the hot weather Houston puts us through. Posted by: Jen at July 8, 2005 02:55 PMLong, hot summer indeed. Of course I'm in Kansas and in my third trimester. Posted by: denise at July 8, 2005 02:57 PMTO: Jen "I think I'll be making a move to Denver within the year and one major reason is to get away from the hot weather Houston puts us through." -- Jen I've been up to Denver about 30% of the time over the last five months. I thought I was in Iowa! This global warming stuff will turn the wheat fields to the east, into tall corn. And Iowa into god-only-knows-what. Regards, Chuck(le) P.P.S. Meanwhile, In Pueblo, it's still hot and, more importantly, DRY. Posted by: Chuck Pelto at July 8, 2005 03:03 PMIt's been over 100 here in South Central Texas since before the 4th Weekend. Add the humidity and the index has been 110 or more. It was 85 frickin' degrees the other day before 9 AM. I love Texas, but I think I'm geting old. I never gave a crap how hot it was when I was 10 :p Posted by: Garrett at July 8, 2005 03:27 PMLet's hope for one SCOTUS resignation each Friday in July. My votes would be O'Connor, Rehnquist, Stevens, Ginsburg and Souter. Denver's been horribly muggy this summer. Humidity as high as 50% with temperatures in the 90s. Posted by: Gregg the obscure at July 8, 2005 03:45 PMRainy, hail AND lightning. I had lightning strike the field behind my house a week ago. Set it on fire. Fortunately, the torrential rain and hail that came 10 minutes later put it out. Posted by: mmurray821 at July 8, 2005 04:01 PMRehnquist is as conservative as they come, so I fail to see how this will make much of a difference. Except that Rehnquist was good at bringing together a consensus. If Bush appoints a Scalia or a Thomas, will they be too strident and let moderates like Kennedy drift to the left? Posted by: Downtown Lad at July 8, 2005 04:03 PMEveryone is waiting for the announcement on Rehnquist. By the way, here in San Francisco, it is maybe 70, breezy fog off the ocean coming in high and fast. By sundown you won't be able to see the tops of the skyscrapers. Posted by: Scott in CA at July 8, 2005 04:20 PMJust checked Drudge - no announcement at 6:21 PM Eastern. Posted by: erp at July 8, 2005 04:21 PMTO: All The outside temp is pushing 100. The humidity is 14%. The swamp-cooler is running like a champ. The temp inside is the low 70s. Regards, Chuck(le) Posted by: Chuck Pelto at July 8, 2005 04:35 PMKennedy's already voting with the lefties on KELO and saying that they need to incorporate international law. Kennedy seems destined to replace O'Connor as the Court's weather vane no matter who the chief is. Ironic that the guy appointed to the court because Bork was too conservative to adeqately protect people's rights voted with the liberals to kill property rights of individuals, more proof than when the libs try to free a terrorist, serial killer or racist on the pretence of protecting the rights of everyone, it's BS. Appoint Janice Rogers Brown... let the dems show how little they really care about the advancement of women and minorities. Posted by: MarkD at July 8, 2005 04:36 PMTO: MarkD "Ironic that the guy appointed to the court because Bork was too conservative to adeqately protect people's rights voted with the liberals to kill property rights of individual..." -- MarkD Hardly. It was part and parcel of their objection to Borke. And it will be part of their rejection of anyone who resembles him. All part of the plan... Regards, Chuck(le) Ya know, Bush should really have gone for cloning. This way we could have 3 or 4 Thomases on the Court. Posted by: rbj at July 8, 2005 05:52 PMScott in CA Ah. But the problem lies in that San Francisco is in California, and is waaay too close to Berkeley. It's said (but apparantly unverified) that Mark Twain said "The coldest winter I ever saw was the summer I spent in San Francisco." Admittedly, the heat this time of year in Arizona is insufferable, but it does keep the riff-raff down. Posted by: azlibertarian at July 8, 2005 06:06 PMAZlib - yes, but really, who cares? I work in SF but live 2 miles north of the UC Berkeley campus. It provides excellent evening lectures, theatre and fine arts, great bookstores, etc. It's a good trade-off if you don't take it seriously. No different than living in Oxford or Cambridge (Mass). Cheers. Posted by: Scott in CA at July 8, 2005 07:25 PMTO: Scott in CA "AZlib - yes, but really, who cares?" -- Scott in CA ...when is the last time you read Lucifer's Hammer? Regards, Chuck(le) Scott: is the Top Dog still there on the north side of campus? Jen I live in Denver moved here with my husband about 6 years ago. I like it here allot. The weather is never dull, we get a couple hot months a year but it is normally dry heat in July and August. Yesterday it was 94. Email me if you need any information. Posted by: Pamela at July 9, 2005 03:52 AMIt sure is balmy here in Pennsylvania. I hope everyone is having a great weekend! I would love to see Bush have a chance to fill 4 SC vacancies, but I doubt that will happen. We can't possibly be that lucky. Posted by: Aaron at July 9, 2005 01:27 PMHarry Reid just called for Bush to appoint a Justice "like Earl Warren." Apparently having visited Gitmo the Democrats are now all in favor of racial detention camps... Posted by: richard mcenroe at July 9, 2005 01:35 PMIt is 1507 in Cal an I have yet to see he's out in any of the MSM. I think it is still a rumor/wish of liberal Republicans so they can justify getting a big government judge appointed and Bush will not continue to look as he has thrown in with the left. Without 2 to fill he will have to pick at list a middle of the roader to not look as liberal as seems to have become. Posted by: Jo macDougal at July 9, 2005 04:09 PMB--- S--- Posted by: Rod Stanton at July 9, 2005 05:55 PMThe press was dogging Rehnquist at home this morning. He refused to confirm or deny. Quote: "Well, you'll just have to see, won't you?" Posted by: richard mcenroe at July 10, 2005 12:17 PMWEATHER REPORT: Come on down to Phoenix...we haven't been below 110 since the middle of June. Then too, we set records for cold this past winter. Posted by: Infidel at July 11, 2005 05:16 AM~48 hours later I repeate B--- S---. Just a bunch of liberals hoping to give Bush a chance to apoint one of their guys. Wishful thinking does not always generate the desired result. Posted by: Rod Stanton at July 11, 2005 02:59 PM |
