"aid and comfort" is an old phrase that goes back to the days when a bedraggled war party would go to a sympathizer for food, bandages and fresh horses. It still applies in the sense that anything that helps them materially to keep fighting is "aid" and comfort comes from the assurance such aid gives that they still have friends and supporters.

I know what you mean. I have in-laws that live in England, and I visit from time-to-time. As the resident Yank, I get amBushed by family, friends, and complete strangers. The worst was a member of the British press after my father-in-law's funeral starting to ask questions about US policy. His initial gambit was, "Why do you think that Americans don't listen more to the opinions of Europeans?"

I wanted to say something like:
1. I don't listen to France, Germany, and Russia because they are the corrupt governments that are profitting by the illegal arms business, the suffering of the Iraqi people, and support for a brutal dictator. I don't generally listen to what criminals want when it comes to crime policy.
2. The French and the Germans are the people whose ass we saved and the people whose ass we kicked.
3. Europeans are not well informed about international law, the UN oil-for-food scandal, or what is at stake in the Middle East.
4. Europeans have always been envious of us, particularly after we rebuilt Europe and did better than the Europeans. Obviously they want a US defeat so they can feel better about themselves.
5. Many Europeans are derranged. Tens of thousands protest Bush when he visits, but only a couple of dozen protest Putin for the pure brutality of Chechnya. Many believe the US knew about or actually planned 9/11.
6. Europeans are cowards by trying to appease the Islamic fanatics in Europe. And they will look to us to bail them out again if things get tough.

I would suggest that anyone surprised by this development should make a point of reading the far-left pubs like the Nation. This exact issue came up right about the time of the Iraqi invasion. Don't remember if the author was Katha Pollitt or the other feminist leftist, but the gist of the article was this: "we aren't afraid of American defeat in Iraq, but of American victory, because if the Americans win they establish another bastion of capitalism."

Well, that's what is happening, and since these folks never accepted the fact that they LOST the cold war AND the hearts and minds of most of the world's population, they are hanging with ANYONE that they think can help them regain their lost power. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend," so what's the surprise? If you can stomach reading the other side's material (I stopped in 2004 but think I will start again) you can get a pretty good idea of what's making them tick.

As to what should be done: the Constitution is pretty clear about what Treason is, and this sure constitutes giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Other posters have made this point better than I.
