Given the fact that the lefties actually root for American deaths and America to loose the war on terror to score partisan political points, I am shocked, shocked, to see your shock at their callousness!

The US had no business or right to impose conditions that lead to changes in Lebanon, a sovereign country. If the Lebanese wanted to ask Syria to leave their country that badly, they would have done so by now.

Obviously the Lebanese are fearful that the US will next turn on them and treat their country like they did Iraq. So they are acting like it was their desire all along, so the US will be placated and turn instead to some other victim.

Insular Americans are so naive about how the world really works.

1 It will never happen.

2 It might happen, but Bush had nothing to do with it.

3 It happened, but it doesn't mean anything.

4 What about the children?! Won't somebody PLEASE think about the children?!

It should be pretty obvious that America has a strategic interest in Lebanese liberty. (Not to mention a moral interest in it.)

For one thing, it will probably help with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is a thorn in our sides in all of our middle eastern dealings.

But more importantly, it helps pave the way towards democratic revolution in Syria, which would remove a violent anti-American terrorist-supporting dictator.

It's bizarre that Matt Yglesias, who is surely an intelligent person, cannot or will not see these obvious points.
