Here We Go Again

There's trouble brewing in Vermont - of all places! - over the Iraq War: "On Tuesday, one-fifth of Vermont towns will consider what role the Vermont National Guard should play in the war, and whether American troops should be withdrawn." ... The New Editor has the full story. Comments
It asks the state's congressional delegation to work to restore a proper federal and state balance over Guard units. I assume these same people would have been against Ike's nationalization of the Alabama guard in the 50s in favor of a "proper federal and state balance[.]" Posted by: Ugh at March 1, 2005 10:45 AMNew Hampshire - "Live free or Die" thats diversity baby... Posted by: Frank Martin at March 1, 2005 10:52 AMHot news flash for VT: it's called the "National Guard" for a reason. Massachusetts tried to excercise some level of control over the National Guard. They lost. Commonwealth of MA v. U.S. D.O.D. Blue folk live on Pluto not Earth. Posted by: Rod Stanton at March 1, 2005 11:16 AM...examine how National Guard deployments are affecting state readiness. readiness for what? the Parti Québécois tank units that are massing at the border? Posted by: Mr. Bingley at March 1, 2005 11:24 AManonymous made the point I was gonna make - yet another failed 80s liberal tactic (ahem, Dukakis) being revived here. Posted by: Crank at March 1, 2005 11:26 AMFrom: The Oval Office Dear Vermont, Thanks for sharing! Regards, GWB Posted by: M. Scott Eiland at March 1, 2005 11:36 AMCrank is correct: the losing politician was none other than Michael Dukakis, the son of Greek immigrants, Presidential candidate, tank driver, and man who mismanaged the Commonwealth of MA so thoroughly that the population got themselves a GOP governor -- and has had one ever since. His petition for Writ of Certiorari got burned, bashed, and buried. And the DNC calls themselves the intelligent ones. Hey, VT, your reality check just bounced. Posted by: anonymous at March 1, 2005 01:09 PMFrom the Christian Science Monitor, clueless, clueless moonbat: Ms. Racht, who helped shepherd Huntington's petition, says she doesn't want to cause more hardship for families with loved ones in Iraq. "But I feel we have a state National Guard that's in Iraq and shouldn't be there. People who went into the Guard thought they would be doing things like floods. They weren't expecting to go and be part of an army fighting a war." --- You don't go play soldier 1 weekend a month and 2 weekends a year to help out w/floods. Back during GW1, they let this kid go cos when he signed up, he didn't know he might have to kill people. They also made him pay back what we spent on his schooling. Posted by: Sandy P at March 1, 2005 03:28 PMWell, Vermont might need its Guard units to quell a race riot or someth -- oh, wait a minute. This is just a rehash of the whole Montgomery Amendment farce when the Democrats tried to keep Reagan from sending Guard and Reserve engineers to Central America... the Democrats are so bankrupt for ideas they had to resurrect this dog, and they couldn't even think of it before the election... Posted by: richard mcenroe at March 1, 2005 08:24 PMBoy, they're pretty desperate to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory aren't they? Interesting note: Vermont is the only state to have recently elected a full-on socialist. Posted by: Seth at March 1, 2005 09:17 PM[Oh crap, I was a bit quick with the post button above.] The socialist in question is Representative Bernie Sanders. The only socialist in Congress -- now in his 7th term, last elected with 65% of the vote. Should tell you something about the huge fever swam that is the state of Vermont.
