CNN's Jeff Greenfield: It's the fault of blogs.
Huh?
Has Greenfield (et al)ever considered that a fair amount of anti-american bias results from how they portray the United States?
It's one thing for us to see news reports on corrupt parts of American, but when they are played overseas, I can't help but ask what it might look like in their eyes.
I've always felt that Hollywood bears a strong part of responsibility in the hatred towards America because of the overwheming anti-military, anti-American basis that serves as the foundation for most plots of Hollywood movies.
It doesnt sound like much to us in the west, but a tremendous amount of information flow in the world is done via VCRs and DVD's in villages all over the world. 9 times out of 10 - they are watching an American movie, and 9 times out of 10, that movie is made by someone of the opinion that America is a hateful corrupt place, deserving of overthrow.
Was Danny Pearl killed because the killers watched "American Beauty"?
I dont think so, but I doubt that the people who lived on the other side of thw wall from where he was slaughted were interested in putting themselves at risk and helping an "American" if they had seen the movie.
We in the US see both sides of the objective media story, but I doubt that both sides are making it to the people around the world. Very often, our representative is a "Man in a blue helmet", who is systematically raping the children of the village.
Blogs are like little kids who want recognition for being all grown up. MSM is like the adult saying when you do grow up, you'll understand. Problem is, MSM will always feel they are the adults and blogs, grown up or not, won't change MSM's mind until people stop watching. Yeah, not going to happen. Blogers can quit watching but average america usually still tunes into Dan, Peter or Brian every night at 6. or o'rielly or brit or who ever.Gonna have to figure out how to grow up with the adults around, and thats the way it is.
Greenfield has no idea what a "trustworthy source" is.
Here's my take: Greenfield's actually more right than he knows.
As blogs and other alternative news and opinion sources (Fox, talk radio, NRO, et al) continue to siphon off conservatives and others dissatisfied with the MSM's worldview, the media feels compelled to run increasingly leftwing stories to placate their remaining viewers. If this is who your audience is (based on surveys, emails complementing your stories, etc.), and you're a journalist who drank the leftwing Kool-Aid in J-school, you're bound to feel like you've got to placate them.
It's a vicious downward cycle, and it's probably only going to get worse.
It's the ant hill discussion from
'Barcelona'
Ed - based on the decline in the MSM market the last 26 years I think you have a good point. They are fabricating their "news" to a more and more extreme market. Hence more and more people go elswhere to get news that is in fact news and not fabrications,
The news to Greenfield is that he is a moron, which I'm sure he finds unwelcome. Therefore, he is a biased moron.
