Bad Omen
Posted by Stephen Green · 16 February 2005
US Navy ships often get cool - and sometimes cruel - nicknames The USS Theodore Roosevelt is known to its crew as "The Big Stick." As in, "speak softly but carry a..." And a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier is a very big stick, indeed. The USS Ronald Reagan is, of course, called "The Gipper." Less well known are "The Forest Fire" and "USS Zippo." Both names were unofficially given to the USS Forrestal after a series of deadly fires. Now Jimmy Carter is getting a Seawolf-class fast-attack boat named after him. I hope like hell no one ever has reason to call her the USS Malaise. Comments
Habitat for Inhumanity? I guarantee you that within ten minutes of the first "think quiet" sign being taped on a hatch door, a monocled and spatted Mr. Peanut cartoon will be drawn on every single one of them. She shall forever be known as "Mr. Peanut" I'ts a dead cert lock. Posted by: Chris Byrne at February 16, 2005 01:04 PMI guess they vetoed USS Kisser of Anti-American Dictator Asses as too wordy. Pity--it fits President Jimmuh better than his given name does. Posted by: M. Scott Eiland at February 16, 2005 01:06 PMSpeaking of Carter... here's some of that wonderful bomb-throwing I was talking about in the Steve Lovelady post. Do you think these guys are really serious, or just blowing off steam? Posted by: Mike C at February 16, 2005 01:06 PMWhen Clinton get's a ship named after him, i expect some hysterical nicknames Posted by: Kenny at February 16, 2005 01:09 PMTo the crews of other vessels, the USS Theodore Roosevelt is known as the Teddy Ruxpin. And now you know...the rest of the story. </Paul Harvey> Posted by: Sekimori at February 16, 2005 01:12 PMThar she blows, Kenny. Posted by: Stephen Green at February 16, 2005 01:13 PMKenny: Willy's Steamboat Posted by: Mike C at February 16, 2005 01:36 PMif they can name the first carrier after Dr/Professor S.P. Langley, who not only never flew a damn thing but never designed anything that did, and if they can name a destroyer after an English Prime minister ( USS Winston S. Churchill) they are capable of just about anything. Posted by: Frank Martin at February 16, 2005 01:39 PMRe: Frank Martin. The naming privilage rest with Congress. At our current climate, I'm kind of surprised that USS George H.W. Bush got through. That prospect of a USS George W. Bush sometime in the future look good, though they'd have some naming issue. As for USS Jimmy Carter, I still held firm that the country would've been much much better served had he stay in the Navy. Posted by: BigFire at February 16, 2005 01:47 PMA Navy acquaintance of mine (who may have been pulling my leg) told me that the sailors aboard CVN-72 Abraham Lincoln refer to the ship most reverently as "Shall Not Perish." Posted by: Jeff Harrell at February 16, 2005 01:51 PMI suppose it could end up getting called the Killer Rabbit... Posted by: Jeff R. at February 16, 2005 01:52 PMI'd vote for "The Swimming Rabbit" after the infamous Carter canoeing incident. Posted by: Gregory Markle at February 16, 2005 02:27 PMRegarding the USS Churchill, his mother was an American (Jenny Jerome). As Prime Minister Churchill noted in a speech before Congress, "I can't help but think that if my mother had been British and my father an American, I might have gotten here on my own." I'm glad that we still have a Churchill on duty. ;-) Posted by: RPL at February 16, 2005 02:28 PMThere was also a USS Comte De Grasse, named after the French Admiral who won the battle of the Chesapeake, sealing Cornwallis' doom in Yorktown. Posted by: Mikey at February 16, 2005 02:33 PMAnd USS Canberra, named after the Australian cruiser sunk at Savo Island. Posted by: Mikey at February 16, 2005 02:34 PMWasn't that sub supposed to be christened the day Ronnie died? Even in the end, peanut's overshadowed. This is old news. Killer Wabbit. Posted by: Sandy P at February 16, 2005 02:51 PMIt's got to be the Killer Rabbit. Bun-Bun, for preference. (What, you don't follow Sluggy Freelance?) Posted by: cirby at February 16, 2005 03:05 PMUSS Carter isn't a baseline SSN-21 class. It's got significant mods (incl hull extension) for covert ops: surveillance, SEAL insertion, etc. All that stuff Jimmah was so down on, back in the day. Anyway, I guess we can stand by for joint ops by CVN-71 and CVN-77, the Stick and--well, what do you figure they'll nickname the GHW Bush? Posted by: RCS at February 16, 2005 03:18 PM"Joint ops." huh huh huh Posted by: RCS at February 16, 2005 03:20 PMTiger because he's got one on his ass? Posted by: Sandy P at February 16, 2005 04:12 PMBill Clinton's already got something named after him--the Marines and the Army use them, rather than the navy. Of course, they were named that before he took office, but hey, the Hummer is a useful vehicle. Posted by: Petro at February 16, 2005 04:28 PMRPL: Not only was Churchill's mother American (as you mentioned), but Churchill was also granted honorary American citizenship by the U.S. Congress in 1963. Churchill was one of the greats of the 20th Century, a staunch ally of the U.S.A., in addition to being much smarter as to Stalin and the Soviet Union's true nature than the majority of the American's of his day (including FDR). I consider, as a Navy vet myself, that the honor in naming a U.S. guided missile destroyer after Churchill is all OURS. Posted by: John Rogers at February 16, 2005 04:43 PMUSS "Thank God we're not a helicopter" Posted by: Mike M at February 16, 2005 04:57 PMDefinitely Killer Wabbit. Wasn't the USS Iowa (BB-61) also called "Big Stick"? Posted by: (the other) John Hawkins at February 16, 2005 06:22 PMDon't forget the U.S.S. Kamehameha, a boomer named after a Hawaiian king who ruled in George Washington's day; and sister ship Simon Bolivar named for the famous South American democratic revolutionary. /ex SSN-642 nuc. Posted by: J. Wilde at February 16, 2005 06:32 PMClearly it should be the USS Swamp Rabbit. Posted by: Josh Poulson at February 16, 2005 06:33 PMUSS Stagflation. Either that, or draw Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, and all the rest on it Posted by: HokiePundit at February 16, 2005 07:14 PMTO: Stephen Green The Lepur Colony. [Note: Lepus is the genus of furry animal that once attacked Jimmy on a boat of his own.] Regards, Chuck(le) Posted by: Chuck Pelto at February 16, 2005 07:19 PMBet ya it sinks at the dock. Posted by: liberalstastelikechicken at February 16, 2005 07:19 PMThe Navy admitted late today that it is unable to get the USS Jimmy Carter out of harbor. The submarine apparently keeps making unexpected hard left turns out of the safe channel... Posted by: richard mcenroe at February 16, 2005 07:34 PMI'll put money on "Lepur Colony"... subtle, succinct... and funny. Posted by: Sgt. Mom at February 17, 2005 10:23 AMLet's just fuck with the Mullahs. Call it the USS Tehran and park it in the Gulf. Other names I like include: TO: Sgt Mom "I'll put money on "Lepur Colony"... subtle, succinct... and funny." -- Sgt Mom I was the designated Acronym Control Officer in my IOAC class. I did puns for s---s and grins. Regards, Chuck(le) P.S. I'm eager to see if it becomes a 'hard luck' boat. Posted by: Chuck Pelto at February 17, 2005 01:09 PMCould call it USS Jimmuh's Revenge, as in 'we're gonna hunt da wabbit, we're gonna hunt da wabbit...' Oh yeah, anyone know someone that can paint giant rabbit's heads? I can think of a coupla torpedoes that are gonna be looking mighty bare. Posted by: JSAllison at February 17, 2005 02:57 PMIt'll be called "one of Lillian's boobs", have a Killer Rabbit painted on the bow, and leave peanut shells as a calling card. Posted by: Neo at February 17, 2005 08:51 PMThe USS Crisis of Confidence. Posted by: Alan K. Henderson at February 18, 2005 12:07 AM |
