Lileks got all screedy again.
Cool.
I saw 10 minutes of "24" for the first time ever this evening. I won't watch it again.
I haven't watched a tv series since Babylon 5 and from what I can gather from freinds, I haven't missed much.
I've seen a couple of episodes of 24, including last night's, when, during the commercials, they had a 15-second spot of Kiefer Sutherland doing a little CAIR infomercial. Paraphrasing, it went something like this:
Hello, I'm Kiefer Sutherland. ...The American Muslim community stands shoulder to shoulder with all our fellow Americans in opposing terrorism. As you watch 24, please keep that in mind.
Uhh, ok, Kiefer, thanks.
As a white southerner, I demand to be portrayed positively in movies and TV. Enough of this "Deliverance"-style typecasting. Can you imagine Burt Reynolds standing there with the guy who had his way with Ned Beatty, saying "The hillbilly community stands with America in opposing anal rape. As you watch Ned 'squeal like a pig', keep that in mind."
I love the people who are offended by the fact that any American could have possibly come up with the idea that terrorists set on destroying our country might be radical islamists from the middle-east.
This is pretty much the same asinine mindset that determined that all the villains in "Die Hard" movies would have British accents, since the Brits were too polite to protest against being maligned like that. I'm surprised we didn't have to watch Bruce Willis being threatened by the wily Finns.
Even more annoying is the fact that Fox caved in to protests from CAIR, which can quite legitimately be accused of harboring terrorist sympathies. Has any Muslim group or individual in the US publicly disassociated themselves from these jerks?
And never mind that this is the second season where Islamic terrorists were the featured bad-guy. The second season of "24" dealt with Islamic terrorists trying to detonate a nuke in Los Angeles, and this was mere months after 9/11!
And, for the record, I love "24". :)
Yes, we "have made cardboard savages of . . . goose-stepping Nazis. . ." Funny, I thought that the Nazis have made savages of themselves. Does Ms. Hornblow have sympathy for them because they were socialists?
God forbid there should be a show dealing with some people of a certain ethnic/religious group who try to kill us, when there are in fact some people of a certain ethnic/religious group who are trying to kill us. Is this what the left has become, defending Nazis in any way, shape or form?
Yes, season 2 of 24 depicted Muslims attempting to detonate a nuke in LA but if you remember, in the end it was only because they were being manipulated by, wait for it . . .
evil white oil men
The sky is falling! 3.5 years in to the GWOT, one movie and one TV show have had terrorists who are Islamic fundamentalists. (And one was animated!) This tide must be stemmed!
[crickets chirp]
I've seen every episode of 24, it's the very definition of a guilty pleasure, and it's about fricking time the Counter Terrorism Unit started countering terrorism from Islaomfascists instead of rogue British agents, oil tycoons and Dennis Hopper.
But I was deeply offended by the one Super Bowl commercial that showed Captain America. The hegemony! Where was Captain U.N. when the nice lady lost her Visa check card?
Matt, who do you think HAD her card.
