Ouch
Posted by Stephen Green · 27 January 2005
I have two favorite quotes for January 27, 2005. Here's the first one: [Larry Sumners] thought he was speaking in a place that encourages uncircumscribed intellectual explorations. He was not. He was on a university campus. Heh. And this bit, too: MIT biology professor Nancy Hopkins. . . "felt I was going to be sick. My heart was pounding and my breath was shallow." And, "I just couldn't breathe because this kind of bias makes me physically ill." She said that if she had not bolted from the room, "I would've either blacked out or thrown up." Both snippets are from the same George Will column. Comments
Nancy Hopkins has emerged as a leader in the "progessive fascist" movement. Posted by: Neo at January 27, 2005 07:42 AMAh, the old familiar case of "the vapors"! I'll have to remind my corporate executive wife to keep some smelling salts in her office, in case a bad old male colleague says something mean to her. Posted by: Pursuit at January 27, 2005 07:51 AMgood grief, why don't you talk about the lying bitch....... Posted by: damian at January 27, 2005 08:20 AMOT: PURPLE PURPLE PURPLE!!!!! (please) OT: Via Captain's Quarters: The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel has a flash announcement on their website that local, state, and federal resources will combine to investigate voter fraud in Milwaukee in November 2004: Local and federal law enforcement authorities are finalizing a task force that is to look into potential fraud in Milwaukee in the Nov. 2 election, sources confirmed today. The task force comes in the wake of Journal Sentinel revelations that more than 1,200 votes came from invalid addresses and that there were other problems with how the election was run in the city. Posted by: Sandy P at January 27, 2005 10:15 AMBravo, George Will! You see, we have intellectually "outlawed" sex-based differences research, in favor of so-she-ology (which is how it should now be spelled in its post-modernist form and to reflect the sociology major's majority numbers) and the study of gender politics. Why? Because "gender" as a concept (or construct) is mutable. It can be changed, shifted, redefined. Sex based differences are seen as immutable. And, that just wouldn't do. Posted by: don bodell at January 27, 2005 10:16 AMI was once thrownout of the MIT Bar. A Lady asked me what University I had attended and I said "Auburn University". She said, "It can't be much of a school, I've never heard of it". I said "Well, I don't think much of MIT, either. You don't even have a football team". She then called me an Ignorant Southern Bastard and I called her a Whiney New England Bitch and the conversation went downhill from there with me eventually getting thrown out. My one Great Achievment in life. Posted by: Deacon Blues at January 27, 2005 10:23 AMSomebody in Cambridge, Massachusetts, actually had enough muscle to throw somebody out of a bar? Actually, I think that MIT does have a football team. It may be a club sport, or perhaps Division III. Posted by: Silicon Valley Jim at January 27, 2005 11:24 AMIt took more than one. At that time, the only University sanctioned sport that I'm aware of, all there were possibly others, was rowing, MIT being right along the Charles River. Posted by: Deacon Blues at January 27, 2005 12:26 PMWho the hell has never heard of Auburn? Sheesh. Posted by: denise at January 27, 2005 12:47 PMOh dear. If I find myself stepping over the unconcious bodies of short-haired, make-up-free, rainbow-tee-shirt clad women clutching the newspaper, I'll know that George Will drove them en masse to the vapors. Posted by: barbara at January 27, 2005 12:59 PMWasn't Auburn the low-priced line from the maker of the Duesenburg? Posted by: triticale at January 27, 2005 06:09 PMAre you sure that George Will wasn't writing about Andrew Sullivan? Posted by: TF6S at January 27, 2005 06:26 PMWhat makes you think he uses that account for anything other than address harvesting? Posted by: Maniakes at January 27, 2005 09:46 PMSteve, Larry Summers is spelled like the season, by the way, not as you have with an "n". Just noticed that. Charlie Posted by: Charlie Quidnunc at January 28, 2005 09:22 AM"physically ill" fleeing the room to avoid puking or passing out... who says this nation isn't pussified? I wish I was there - I'dve applauded that bit of drama. Posted by: TMWNEE at January 28, 2005 03:08 PMWasn't Auburn the low-priced line from the maker of the Duesenburg? No, it's a rural suburb of Puyallup, which is a suburb of Tacoma, WA. Speaking as a Seattleite, I have to describe Auburn as "a place that aspires to be hicksville someday." ;) Posted by: rosignol at January 29, 2005 02:40 AMWhen the Republicans won big in 1994 I was wandering around the house and noticed some gospel music coming from the tv.. It took me about 30 seconds before I was stunned and actually frightened to find out it was a serious wail about the return of slavery to the Nation due to the Republican victory. They thought they were frightened? Lord help me, instead. I'd been struck by the incomprehensible and was sore afraid. Posted by: J. Peden at January 29, 2005 12:42 PMI'm as solidly NE yankee as they come, by both attitude and genealogy. They don't like me either. It has nothing to do with the southern accent and everything to do with having to buy a brand name, whether it makes a better product or not. Posted by: Assistant Village Idiot at January 29, 2005 04:54 PM(With apologies to Will) I once had a co-worker--an Auburn alum--ask me if I knew what the "n" in Auburn stood for.
