I cannot recommend this William J. Stuntz column highly enough. Don't just read it - memorize it. UPDATE: When I first posted this minutes ago, I screwed up the link. I didn't wait to fix it, so you shouldn't wait to read it. Comments
Where is Allah? Posted by: Scott Brady at October 19, 2004 10:15 PMThe link is screwed up. Posted by: Remy Logan at October 19, 2004 10:16 PMIn case VP has gone to sleep, I think this is what he meant: article. Yes, you should read it. Definitely worth reading. It's the most concise, cogent argument for why Bush's policy is right and Kerry's is wrong. Might I suggest just a tad less vodka in the martini? It appears to be rather strong... ;-) Posted by: rosignol at October 19, 2004 10:46 PMKerry reminds me of that proverb: When the only tool you've got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Stuntz does a great job of showing why Kerry's hammer just isn't going to be effective when dealing with terrorism. For all that Kerry has been critized for flip-flopping, his rigidity on this topic -- dealing with terrorism as a law-enforcement issue about all else -- has been been stunning. But then again, Kerry himself admitted that 9/11 didn't change him. Posted by: Joan at October 20, 2004 01:32 AMThis would seem to me to be a prima facia argument to elect Bush. What Kerry is missing is that terrorists NEED states like Iran and Syria...or at the very least, military/intel help from states like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, to survive and carry out their deeds. Posted by: superhawk at October 20, 2004 08:45 AMVodkapundit: Thanks much for the strong recommendation that I read the W.J. Stuntz piece, and, of course, for finding it for me. Thing is: prosecutors are not an effective tool in stopping this kind of mass murder (may I add, state sponsored?) founded on Islamofascism and its goals -- which I suggest is a naked grab for territory. The good analogy is the taming of the wild west or Barbary pirates - where gunslingers, thugs and other ne'er-do-wells had to be taken down. The take-down was not accomplished with jury arguments. Witnesses were too often killed, in cahoots with the bad guys, or otherwise intimated or bought -- as here. In both cases, the take down was accomplished with brute force. I think folks like Mr. Kerry don't accept this -- and probably think the actions of folks like the Earps and those Pinkerton employees were wrong as being too forceful or lacking appropriate procedure -- leaving us on his watch with nothing but fancy pants DA's and post-60's criminal procedures to deal with men and women truly dedicated to killing you and me and many of our compatriates. We don't even have a police force that can kill bad guys without recrimination from the MSM / NGOs. Let's also not forget that the days of hanging judges have long passed -- even where cases are successfully prosecuted and the 10-15 years of post-sentencing proceedings have been completed. I also would like to hear examples of which terrorist acts over the last 4 (or 5) decades were nuisances and those that were not. How abstract could the issue have become for him to say this? Presumably to Mr. Kerry because only 1 person was murdered, Mr. Klinghoffer's demise was nothing more than a regrettable nuisance. This presumption is based on us going "back" to a time when terrorism was just a nuisance. If September 11, 2001 at 7:30 am Eastern was such a time, I suppose I need to add a bunch more nuisances. Also, what about that little issue that terrorists must ratchet up the action as their atrocities no longer shock? It's just not terrorism if it does not terrorize. Hence, once we declare multiple terrorist acts "nuisances", which is presumably the point that J. Kerry will declare his victory on the GWOT given the stated goal of going back to that magical time, the terrorists will know its radiological or bust. J. Kerry's position as reflected in this single statement is absolutely untenable. Naturally, I'm just a dope that doesn't get the nuance. Better though to keep hassling the state sponsors everywhere they may be found and killing the bad guys before they can kill us or our kin. Thanks again for the link and also thanks for this space to write. Posted by: James Bradley at October 20, 2004 10:36 AM"If we wait long enough, Islamic terrorism will meet the same fate as the Mafia." -Stuntz How long is long enough? 1400 years? Islamic jihad ... terrorism ... is written into the Koran itself, and we have lots of history to show this. Even Stuntz is deceived on this, let alone Kerry. The people who do these things are not merely mobsters, not criminals to their society, they are the righteous heroes. And the recipients of "many vergins" in heaven. This will not go away by the action of mere political and market forces. The closer we get to the end of the cheap oil age, the worse this is going to get, for their power will continue to grow.
