The Fox News guys look happy. That's my own version of an exit poll.

UPDATE: Mort Kondracke calls it "dirty pool" that Kerry "outed" Dick Cheney's gay daughter. He thinks Kerry is trying to weaken Bush with the anti-gay people who would otherwise gravitate to Bush.

Not that Mary Cheney's orientation is a secret -- but is Kondracke onto something here? Look at my entry for 7:30pm in the main Drunkblog post, and you'll see that I raised the question, "Why?"

Comments

It was a boring, low-energy draw. However, I have the feeling that Bush told more, er, "misstatements."

In his answer to immigration, Bush regurgitated the AILA pap he told O'Reilly. Kerry at least pointed out that middle easterners are coming over the border and that workplace enforcement is not being done. Kerry missed a great chance to indict Bush for his complete failure to protect the homeland.

Thank you for staying sober long enough to finish the debate.

I enjoyed your live posts on the debate.

W took the ribbon ... yes a few miss steps but Kerry was not at all approachable ... a wonk without a soul ... Bush was solid and human

Posted by: p at October 13, 2004 08:51 PM

IMO, it was over the line for Kerry to bring up Mary Cheney out of the blue. Edwards did the same thing.

Is there anything these guys won't do to score a cheap political point?

Posted by: Sister Toldjah at October 13, 2004 09:04 PM

"Kerry missed a great chance to indict Bush for his complete failure to protect the homeland."

You mean the complete failure to prevent another terrorist attack on American soil?

You mean the complete failure to pursue and kill terrorists, particularly Bin Laden's group of thugs?

You mean the complete failure to attempt to foment change in the area of the globe that breeds said terrorists?

Oh wait, this administration has done all those things. Then I fail to see your point.

Posted by: Garrett at October 13, 2004 09:14 PM

That's my theory on why Kerry brought up Cheney's daughter tonight. It struck me as a slimeball thing to do, and I hope it is noticed in the post-debate wrap up tomorrow.

Bush's first term has not been perfect, but I just can't believe that half the country wants to elect a pandering, manipulative elitist like Kerry. But then again, Clinton would have won a third term...

Posted by: illingirl at October 13, 2004 09:34 PM

You mean the complete failure to prevent another terrorist attack on American soil?

Chechen terrorists probed: U.S. security officials are investigating a recent intelligence report that a group of 25 Chechen terrorists illegally entered the United States from Mexico in July...

Round up of earlier chatter about terrorist infiltrating the U.S. because of our porous borders here.

Yeah, I know. "It's not Bush's fault." Nothing ever is as long as the generals, Clinton, English companies, etc. etc. can be blamed.

Posted by: The Lonewacko Blog at October 13, 2004 10:11 PM

So where's the attack that Bush has failed to prevent?

Your name is looking more and more well-earned, lonewacko.

Posted by: rosignol at October 13, 2004 10:18 PM

Anyone thought to check Vegas or the boobie bars for those terrorists?

Posted by: Sandy P at October 13, 2004 10:54 PM

So where's the attack that Bush has failed to prevent?

What a truly retarded statement. Any Bush supporters willing to say they disagree?

Here's a tip: pretend it's some date before 9/11/01. Any date before that time will do.

Then, go read Chapter 3 of the 9/11 Commission Staff Report.

Lonewacko: So you're willing to petition Congress to increase the size of the Border Patrol and Coast Guard in order to fully staff and secure the country's boundaries? You're also willing to stringently enforce immigration laws against those that illegally attempt to enter or do enter the country?

I'll go along with that. If you aren't willing to do so, please tell me what you would suggest?

Please remember, in your suggestions, to not violate the laws of physics, economics, political reality, or good taste (the last relates to any suggestions about me.) ;)

So you're willing to petition Congress to increase the size of the Border Patrol and Coast Guard in order to fully staff and secure the country's boundaries? You're also willing to stringently enforce immigration laws against those that illegally attempt to enter or do enter the country?

As I've continually pointed out:

1. Fining companies that hire illegal aliens is the best way to reduce illegal immigration.

2. Under Bush, the number of employers who have been fined has been sharply reduced.

So, start fining employers again.

The other thing that can be done is to stop the giveaways to illegal aliens. Those include: social security, foreign ID cards, driver's licenses, etc. etc.

Once again, Bush is on the wrong side. For instance, he wants to allow banks to accept Mexican ID cards. The FBI and the DOJ call those cards a security threat. And, the cards are only of use to illegal aliens. And, Mexican consuls travel the U.S. passing those cards out to their citizens who are here illegally. And, Mexican consuls attend local city council meetings encouraging communities to change their laws to accept those cards. Once again, Bush worked to allow banks to accept those cards.

If we increase the number of employers who are fined and stop the giveaways, many of those here illegally will deport themselves and many fewer will attempt to come.

That will make the job of the BP and CG much easier.

Now, of course, Mexico will complain. In the past, Bush has folded when Mexico complains, so I'd say these stand little chance of happening while he's still president.

If Bush is reelected, how many more illegal aliens will come to the U.S. because of his policies?

I believe the answer to your question of WHY? is best answered here:

Vote for Edwards and Kerry, Because Their Daughters Aren't Dykes

So anyway, Edwards waded in over his head, and Cheney stuck a pin in his water wings, and Edwards responded by calling Mary Cheney a lesbian. The message? Twofold. 1. Cheney's daughter is a dyke, and dykes are abnormal, so he has a sick, dysfunctional family, and you shouldn't vote for him. 2. Cheney is a hypocrite because he's conservative and has a homosexual in his family.

I won't lie, the author of the article is biased to the republican side, but he does make some valid points.

Just thought that might help you answer your question of why, vp. =)

Posted by: brian at October 14, 2004 12:36 PM

Okay, lonewacko, time to pull out the cluebat.

From the end of the story you linked to:

Since October 2003, authorities have arrested five Arabs attempting to cross illegally into the United States from Mexico.
In July, officials dismissed as untrue an Internet report that said a group of Middle Eastern men were recently caught trying to cross the border from Mexico.
The report apparently was based on a group of Oaxacan tribesmen who were stopped as they tried to cross the border in Arizona. The tribesmen spoke an Indian language native to southern Mexico that may have been mistaken for Arabic, officials said at the time.

You really think it's appropriate to accuse the President of "complete failure to protect the homeland" on the basis of an unverified- and unverifiable- rumor, despite the FACT that there hasn't been a terrorist attack in the US since 9/11/01?

And you think my insistence on something with more substance than a rumor to justify the accusation is 'truly retarded'?

The thing you're blowing holes in is your own credibility, lonewacko. And you didn't have much to begin with.

Posted by: rosignol at October 14, 2004 07:18 PM

Well, that settles it then. Because a government spokesman downplayed one report out of seven all of them must be false. (Unfortunately, I've seen a local newspaper's report and they were a bit less sure about that.)

Also, different reports have come from two Texas congressmen - one Dem, one Repub - and a U.S. Attorney in Texas.

Let me try to clue you into something that everyone else reading this has already figured out. There were no terror incidents in the U.S. from 9/10/98 to 9/10/01. However, on 9/11/01 we payed the price for ignoring the signals in the preceding years.

The same thing could be happening now, but some people are more interested in short-term political gain than the safety of the U.S.
