Debate Drunkblogging - LIVE (on tape)!
Posted by Stephen Green · 8 October 2004
We're meeting friends for dinner tonight, but the TiVo will get the debate for me. I'll watch the thing tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm on a news blackout. Don't want to color my opinions beforehand. Cheers. Comments
Who's liveblogging tonight? Posted by: Nate at October 8, 2004 06:05 PMHope it's ok that I'm about to shamelessly promote my site, but I'm liveblogging tonight: www.alarmingnews.com Posted by: Karol at October 8, 2004 06:08 PMAnd what will you be drinking? Liveblogging at my place, powered by pumpkin ale :) Posted by: Adrianne Truett at October 8, 2004 06:17 PMI'm blogging from the Coors for Senate headquarters in Colorado Springs so I'll let you guess what I'm drinking. :-) Posted by: Karol at October 8, 2004 06:27 PMhttp://llamabutchers.mu.nu LLamabutchers are liveblogging from St. Louis! Posted by: Steve Llamabutcher at October 8, 2004 06:51 PMI'm not live-blogging, but readers will be live-commenting. Come on over! Posted by: LB at October 8, 2004 06:51 PMYeah, me too. Maybe I'll have a drink or two in honor. NZ Bear is keeping a list. Posted by: Spoons at October 8, 2004 06:52 PMLiveblogging the debate tonight. Now that I set up my new iMac G5. Posted by: Casual Observer at October 8, 2004 06:57 PMOh, where am I liveblogging? http://observingcasually.blogspot.com Posted by: Casual Observer at October 8, 2004 06:58 PMI'm live blogging it here. I'm liveblogging: BurntOrangeReport.com - I'm a Democrat, so don't say I didn't warn ya... Posted by: Byron L at October 8, 2004 07:20 PMFunniest line so far. Bush talking about world leaders, on how to rally them: 'I know how these people think.' Huh. I guess he must want to push them away. Live comment: Bush is tearing it up in a big way. No more sleepy sourpuss tonight! Maybe Karl Rove had him chug a couple Red Bulls or something... No major winning/losing lines yet, but Bush hammered Kerry into the ground on Iraq. Heh...Kerry looks pretty upset at being called a liberal too. Posted by: Mike M at October 8, 2004 07:47 PMThis is turning into a rout. Kerry is talking about welfare reform during an environmental question. Being called a liberal really rattled him. Bush owned Kerry in a big way on the environmental question. Very bad sign. Posted by: Mike M at October 8, 2004 08:04 PMWinding down, Kerry is looking tired, passimistic, and defensive and Bush is still going strong. Looks like a reversal from the first debate. ...and Kerry stumbles across the line with "a slush fund for Halliburton". Weak. Wonder how the wrap up spin is going to look. MSM will probably push a draw (of course), but Kerry got his butt handed to him tonight. Posted by: Mike M at October 8, 2004 08:34 PMWhy can't Bush understand how the debate works? How many times has he demanded a chance to speak when Charlie was trying to hand him a chance to speak? He thinks Charlie is stopping him when no one is doing anything, and he even tries to stand up and give his closing speech when Charlie is introducing Kerry. Real strength under fire. I'd shudder to watch him in the war room. Thanks for checking out our Casual Observations on tonight's debate. Hope you enjoyed such witty, snarky comments! Posted by: Casual Observer at October 8, 2004 08:40 PMWhat a bunch of horribly weak questions. Please, more lawyers next time. Slight advantage to Kerry for somewhat indicting Bush on his failures. But, once again, not enough. And, he didn't bring up Bush's complete failure to secure the homeland by securing the borders. If he'd brought up Bush's "guest worker" plan - which would drive millions of jobs down to minimum wage levels - he could have scored huge. Posted by: The Lonewacko Blog at October 8, 2004 08:41 PMMuch better job by Bush, IMO he won. He was much more on target, and actually tangentially mentioned "Hey Kerry, France wouldn't join you. They were on the take." Of course, Bush did badly in the first debate in order to do well here. That evil Karl Rove. Posted by: Robert at October 8, 2004 08:55 PMHa. Just like I said. The NBC focus group convieniently declared the debate a draw, and Tom Browak dutifully followed up by saying that consensus was likely shared across the country. How pitifully predictable. Posted by: Mike M at October 8, 2004 09:02 PMBe sure to vote on debate at sites below. The dem minions are out in droves to load these up against the President. Please vote for winner of debate: Vote in Online Polls CBS: http://www.cbsnews.com/ SPOILER, but it will keep you on your toes: Yes, he does get Haliburton in. (Also, apparently he has a plan.) Posted by: McGroarty at October 8, 2004 09:11 PMWait, Kerry has a plan? You know, I wish he had mentioned that he had a plan. ({sarcasm}I'd have even settled on him discuss his actual plan(s){/sarcasm}) Posted by: Robert at October 8, 2004 09:18 PMLive after blogging: Bush kicked a**!!!! Sorry to possibly colour your opinion Stephen, but I assume you won't read these comments 'til after ya watch the debate. No, I know you won't, 'cause you are good. And I know you'll agree that Bush did kick some serious you know what! ~ and Kerry sucks. PS - love your site. Posted by: Muz at October 8, 2004 09:21 PMIf you're TiVo'ing it, wouldn't be on hard drive and not "on tape"? Posted by: scott at October 8, 2004 09:28 PMBush was on fire tonight. He even mixed in some humor: wanna buy some wood? Gotta like a guy who can laugh at himself. Of course, I'd have a Bud Light with him, but....I don't have enough for him. It's all MINE! TD - Oswego, IL Posted by: Tommy D at October 8, 2004 09:30 PMWhat an opportunity for someone to throw down their opinion of this debate before the VP (Vodka Pundit, not Vice President) has given his opinion of it because he Tivo'd the thing, in order to compare views later... BTW I'm pretty inebriated myself... The first debate was won on style by Kerry, on substance by Bush and the media spun it as a big win for Kerry The VP (Meaning "Vice Presidential" this time) debate was won slightly by Cheney, more on substance than on style, and the media spun it as a tie Tonight's debate was won slightly on style and comfortably on substance by the President, and the media will probably spin it as another tie. In all three of these debates, the moderation was about as fair as you could expect from liberal media stars, and I have no real gripes there. Kudos to them for doing their jobs as best as you could ask. I'll now wait and see what the VP says and see whether I was close. Posted by: Grub at October 8, 2004 10:06 PMHmm. I'll concur with the previous posters who say we're not writing spoilers for Stephen. In fact, I'd be surprised if he reads our drivel at all, come tomorrow:) My take: there actually ARE a lot of undecideds out there. These are the people who told pollsters they were for Bush all September, but switched to Kerry last week. If these people were just spooked by negatives from the last debate, they may be low-hanging fruit that will come back over after tonight's much stronger performance. Otherwise, not likely to change many minds either way. Posted by: ArtD0dger at October 8, 2004 10:41 PMIf you like grey helmet hair, Kerry won. If you like your uncle with the... Oh, hell. That lady in the red sweatshirt with the sparkly dinosaur on her boobies won. She will now determine the free world's direction for the next four years. What's TiVo? Posted by: -Ed. at October 8, 2004 11:27 PMin response to the lumber yard comment, Bush should've commented that there isn't any trees in texas Posted by: Kenny at October 9, 2004 12:12 AMMichael Badnarik and David Cobb arrested for protesting the debate in St. Louis! What a country we live in when the so-called presidential debates are nothing but a scripted infomercial for the two major parties. He isn't exactly a handsome man. I only saw the first hour or so, but Bush was kicking ass while I was watching. Posted by: Chris S. at October 9, 2004 05:21 AMBadnarik dude: nothing but a scripted infomercial You didn't hear the debate. Posted by: Jim at October 9, 2004 07:52 AMChris S.... No you're not. To add to your observation, I thought he looked as though he'd had a recent botox treatment. I'll give kudos to whoever screened the audience to put in truely undecideds, rather than partisans maskerading as such. That said, if anyone is still undecided at this point, they either have been paying no attention at all, or have no ability to make a decision. The facts on these two have been out there for quite some time. Kerry is good on style. He's been a professional debater for nearly 30 years. However, the bankruptcy of his ideas comes through when he speaks. Bush's performance was better than a week ago, and his ideas, of course, are what we need. Scoring goes to Bush. BTW, this libertarian wouldn't sit in the same room with Badnarik. There is promise in the libertarian philosophy, but Badnarik ruins it. I'll be happily voting for Bush. Posted by: Chris S. at October 9, 2004 03:45 PMIs anyone else a little upset with "I have a plan Kerry? Why has Kerry waited all this time to cure all of America's ills? Why did he not share even one of his plans with America while a US Senator? Just one cure would have made America a better place. He has a plan for everything. I would like to ask him about his plan to cure hairloss and save all the emotional suffereing associated with it. I'm sure that the balding, white males are a real voting block. If I were to take a shot every time Kerry said "I have a plan", my blood alcohol level would be approaching 90 by the end of the night. "Go to JohnKerry.com . . . because my plans are too long-winded and full of crap for me to explain verbally." Posted by: Chris S. at October 10, 2004 08:17 AMFor those whose attitude about the war on terror has softened over the last 3 years, as well as those who need a reminder of why it is worth fighting, the Deterrence article at EjectEjectEject.com is a good read. For those who are using the war in Iraq for political purposes, while our soldiers are at risk fighting it, from the memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant: "Experience proves that the man who obstructs a war in which his nation is engaged, no matter whether right or wrong, occupies no enviable place in life or history. Better for him, individually, to advocate 'war, pestilence, and famine' than to act as obstructionist to a war already begun. The history of the defeated rebel will be honorable hereafter, compared with that of the Northern man who aided him by conspiring against his government while protected by it. The most favorable posthumous history the stay-at-home traitor can hope for is - oblivion." Posted by: Jim R at October 10, 2004 09:15 AMJim, a great quote that should be given more air time.
