Step Away From the Documents With Your Hands In the Air
Posted by Stephen Green · 13 September 2004
CBS News is backing away from the memos, oh-so-carefully: Casting further doubt on the memos, The Dallas Morning News said in a report for its Saturday editions that the officer named in a memo as exerting pressure to "sugar coat" Mr. Bush's record had left the Texas Air National Guard 1½ years before the memo was dated. Meanwhile, Dan Rather still sees no reason to let Aunt Millie load the shotgun while the dog ain't barking: After being attacked continuously for the past six days by everyone ranging from posters at FreeRepublic.com, to Web sites like this one, Powerline, and Instapundit, to large media organizations like The Washington Post, The New York Times, and his network television rivals, CBS mounted another defense of itself tonight. In other news, that French guy and the lawyer guy who want to go to Vietnam or the White House or whatever, continue to make speeches in places where voters might or might not be. Unless they aren't. I can't really tell from here. Comments
Well, so even if for a minute one wanted to take a leap in logic and dismiss the memos, what about these questions? Did a friend of the Bush family use his influence with the then-Texas House Speaker to get George W. Bush into the National Guard? Did Lt. Bush refuse an order to take a required physical? Was he suspended for "failing to perform up to standards"? And did he complete his commitment to the Guard? Posted by: Caleb at September 13, 2004 11:15 PMDid he refuse an order? The sole source for which is a fake memo! I see a career for Caleb at CBS. Posted by: Jim in Chicago at September 13, 2004 11:34 PM"In other news, that French..." LMAO! Posted by: Scott B at September 13, 2004 11:37 PMI see a career for Caleb at CBS. I seems there are some positions about to open up there. Posted by: David [.net] at September 13, 2004 11:40 PMCaleb, I'll briefly update you: 1. There was NO waiting list for Bush to jump. There were slots open for college graduates who passed the aptitude tests and would commit to two years of full time active duty training and a 6 year total Guard commitment. The waiting list was for enlisted positions. Bush volunteered for the pilot-candidate officer's training program, and was accepted. I have seen NO reporting that ANYONE who met these requirements was turned down by TANG. And several former officers in the program have corroborated this. 2. There WAS no order to take the flight physical. That was the fraudulent memo, remember? Bush never took his physical in 1973 because there were no flight opportunities for him. To take the physical anyway would have been a waste of time, and would have gone against normal practice, as NO pilot would take a flight physical if it were not demanded by his current or ongoing flight status. 3. He was routinely exempted from flight eligibility after his birthday passed with no physical. Again, this is normal protocol for newly non-flying personnel. He was not going to be allowed to fly due to the wind-down of the war, and the failure to accept the low-time Bush for ongoing F-102 flight activities. Why would the TANG let Bush fly the limited amount of flight hours on the aircraft, when they had a surfeit of higher-time pilots available? Think about it, it makes sense. Lastly, I have seen printouts of Bush's "points" accrued during his TANG duty. He easily exceeded his requirements, and even "drilled" extra in July, 1973 to allow for his early departure, which was asked for, and accepted. Along with many hundreds of other "early outs" disbursed at the end of the Vietnam War. Posted by: j.pickens at September 13, 2004 11:44 PMLooks like Dan is following Pierre Salinger, also brought up short by phony documents. Posted by: Robert at September 14, 2004 10:52 AMIs CBS a political organization or a news organization? See my analysis here. Posted by: The Proprietor at September 14, 2004 11:45 AMFWIW, I think it would be helpful if someone were to tell us what a "flight physical" involves. I think most folks figure it's a combination check up (open your mouth and say "Ah," tap your knee, kind of thing) and a drug test (aka, piss in this cup). IIRC, it's quite a bit more extensive than that. So, missing a flight physical is not simply not showing up at the doc's at oh-dark-thirty. Posted by: Dean at September 14, 2004 12:00 PMContrary to your assertions, J. Pickens, there are military orders showing Bush was suspended from flight duty for failure to take his flight physical. See: In addition, then-current regulations were such that substitute training had to be approved in advance, or performed within 15 days of the missed training, which was NOT the case with Bush's alleged substitute training. US News & World Report, among several other sources, says Bush's points don't add up http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/040920/usnews/20guard.htm Finally, can you offer ANY documentation (other than White House or RNC spokesmen) for your assertion that Bush was "routinely exempted from flight eligibility" ? I'd love to see it. Posted by: Chris in SF at September 14, 2004 04:06 PM |
