Is there anywhere in Colorado Springs where I can get a real roast beef sandwich? Preferably on a nice, light rye with spicy mustard and a little horseradish?

The local Jewish community, Dave, isn't answering his phone this afternoon.

Comments

Extreme Pizza has some nice sandwiches delivered... but you'll have to do the horseradish yourself.

In a Pinch, theres always:

Schlotzsky's Deli
8310 Razorback Rd
Colorado Springs, CO
Phone: (719) 536-0001

Thanks, Frank. But I don't think there's a pinch big enough to call Schlotzsky's a real deli.

Anyway, I did find Oliver's close by. They're closed on Sundays, but a peek in the window told me that it's a real deli. Looking forward to lunch tomorrow.

I would agree with you there, but its been my experince that deli doesnt travel well off the island of Manhattan, I try to set my expectactions accordingly.

I liked this place:

A Flavor of NY Deli
1014 B 21st St.

Only got to go once.

well, I hope "olivers" is good and I hope you do a review. I hate eating at the 'usual suspects' when I'm out of town.

Hmmm.

It's like that all over the world it seems. I lived for years in Florida and North Carolina and couldn't get decent Italian food. Not one stupid slice of pizza that wasn't totally inedible! Not one!!

Finally I moved back to New Jersey and had myself a plain pie from Jimmy's in Asbury Park. Definitely THE place to get pizza, or any Italian food, down by the Jersey Shore.

Last time I went there with a friend we were supposed to pick up one large pie. We ate that thing halfway back to the house. So we went back and got another one. We ate that one almost back to the house. So we finally ordered another one and made it home before devouring it (and the box).

The girlfriends were pretty pissed by this point. :)

Jimmy's in Asbury Park. It's even better than that stuff they sell in Chicago. :)

God. It's late on Sunday, Jimmy's isn't open and now I've got a hunger going on for a Jimmy's pizza. sigh.

Olivers is in my neighborhood. It's pretty good, probably a little limited by many deli standards. How about the Broadway Deli(?) on North Academy by the new ReMax place.

C'mon Stephen,
We all know how much you love to cook, why/how could you search outside your own domicile for said sandwich.
I still, age 60+, pack my own lunch and I just happened to do beef today.
A marinated in Stubb's Beef marinade and then BarBq'd to rare Choice Angus tri-tip on "Milk & Honey" white bread, Best Foods Mayo,(Hienmanns E of the Miss)dijon/chardonnay mustard, grilled home grown yellow bell peppers, sharp Tillamook Cheddar cheese. No sandwich shop I've frequented coast to coast can duplicate what we can do at home.
Mike
BTW, the beef was cooked some time ago, but, thanks to modern vacumn pack technology, can be frozen in individual sandwich portions and utilized at one's convenience.
G-d I love science and technology!

No, no, no!

What you really want is roast beef on light rye with Swiss cheese... :)

Posted by: Casey Tompkins at August 29, 2004 10:58 PM

When my local sandwich place said "we can give you the roast beef because it is 'too' bloody", I almost yelled at them. That is the way I want it, Red and bleeding. Took a little bit of talking, but I got my sandwich and it was great.

Living in California has it's drawbacks sometimes. To be scared of what you sandwich can do to you!! It boggles the mind. If they didn't make great NY cheese steaks, I wouldn't even bother with them. M

My heart says Phili, but my stomach says NY. Guess who wins?

Jersey has great roast beef. Plenty of deli here. Too bad the rest of the state sucks.

On a happier note -- my personal favorite -- shaved (really brings out the flavor) Boar's Head roast beef on rye or a good poppy seed bun. A little fresh Mayo rules, or if I'm lucky, my wife will whip up a batch of spiced mayo -- couple different kinds from Emeril's site...

As far as pizza goes - Mama's in Garwood, NJ. It's not a thin crust, but it is excellent. My read is that their sauce is better... Thin crust--> Old World Pizza (with sauce on the side) at the Sun Tavern in Roselle Park, NJ. If garlic were lethal, this pizza would qualify as a WMD. Muy estinky.

Strange. The best Philly cheese steaks can be found in Delaware (Wilmington, specifically; I have no memory of where, exactly). What's sold as Philly cheese steaks in any other state ('cept perhaps Pennsylvania) only resembles a real Philly cheese steak insofar as they have meat and cheese on them.
