Sullivan poured the Kool Aid into his snifter. He gave it a good swirl, and brought the concoction up to his nose for a subtle whiff -- and then he set the glass back down on the table: One thought sprang into my mind immediately: what an arrogant jerk. There's much more. Read it here. Comments
Yes, and then he apparently decided that the "arrogant jerk's" defensive strategy on terrorism was preferable to Bush's stance on religion and government. I'm not for the latter, but the former is the more serious and more immediate threat. Sullivan use to be able to make those distinctions. Posted by: doug b at July 29, 2004 11:08 PMAnother place Sulllivan is not up to speed is IRan. There is a huge difference between Bush's and Kerry's statements (or lack of, in Kerry's case) on the subject. I don't think Sullivan has been following this as closely as he should. To me, it is the most important issue. Posted by: Roger L. Simon at July 30, 2004 12:21 AMMy lord, am I the only one who's sick of how obsessed everyone is with telling us why Sully is wrong? I don't even read this man's site but once or twice a month but if I had a dime for every blog comment or posting telling us why Andrew Sullivan's stupid, wrong, deceptive, or evil, I'd be richer than John Kerry. Do you people have your own fucking opinions or is your world just about Why Andrew Sullivan Is Wrong? Yeesh. Posted by: Dean Esmay at July 30, 2004 12:39 AMAs to W wearing his religion on his sleeve - geez - he stole that from RR Jr? - I still say it's going to take a fundie to beat a fundie. And whether we like it or not, this war is about religion. Posted by: Sandy P at July 30, 2004 12:41 AMSandyP, not everyone who is religous is a "fundie", whatever that means. If you are drawing a parallel between people that believe in God and go to church and the woman-stoners in Saudi Arabia, you have just insulted a whole lot of people. Posted by: DaveP. at July 30, 2004 03:13 AMHey Dean, did it ever occur to you that many of us have read a lot of Sully's work, agreed with a lot of his opinions, and are now just discussing why we think he's wrong? He's popular, for better or for worse. You, on the other had, I've never heard of, so pardon me for ignoring your complaining about our complaining. Yeesh indeed. Posted by: Rob at July 30, 2004 06:24 AMRob, Dean Esmay has a non-trivial loyal readership of his own. Most notably, the Puppy Blender just deemed Dean's Pledge to be an important political statement. Which doesn't really matter, given that he wasn't asking why people weren't discussing Sully instead of him. Disclaimer: I'm part of that loyal readership. Posted by: triticale at July 30, 2004 06:51 AMBush is a Methodist for crying out loud. Not exactly the First Church of Burning Them At The Stake. Posted by: Mike at July 30, 2004 07:04 AM"Do you people have your own fucking opinions or is your world just about Why Andrew Sullivan Is Wrong?" Well, not everyone goes out of their way to paint a bullseye on their forehead but Sullivan deserved everything he got. And I wouldn't expect that "non-trivial readership" to grow much if Dean's way of introducing himself is a profanity laced tirade... Just about every day I have an opinion about why Sullivan is wrong (or right), and in each case the opinions ARE my own. It's the way he writes...the agonized conflicted feelings over certain issues that keeps me coming back...and keeps me forming opinions about what he writes. Is this a bad thing? Posted by: BillB at July 30, 2004 07:18 AMFirst, Dean writes good stuff. I should visit his blog more. Especially being a fellow metro-Detroiter. Second, just because what he said is a little insulting doesn't mean it's wrong. I kinda agree that Sullivan has been talked to death. Posted by: aaron at July 30, 2004 08:32 AM"Is this a bad thing?" It is for those who are slavishly devoted to our miserable two-party system, which this year demands that we choose between a self-righteous, intellectually lazy, spendthrift-cum-theocrat, and a spineless, pandering, neo-leftist windbag. Posted by: Eric at July 30, 2004 08:34 AMDyslexics. The title of this thread is SullyWatch. It's only one thread out of many. Easy to ignore, but no--knowing what the thread was about they had to crash it and insult everyone who chose to comment on this particular subject. Even though they themselves also chose to comment on the same thread. Jerks. Posted by: Fleming at July 30, 2004 08:40 AMMy bad. And it's Lysdexic. Posted by: aaron at July 30, 2004 09:09 AMDave, while I know that, and while I'm a Christian - Presby - (and the leadership has its head up its ass) in certain circles, if one actually believes one is a fundie. I'm not the one setting the tone. The lefties and MSM are. But W is a more outward believer. I've heard "Battle Hymn of the Republic" more in the last 3 years than I have in the past 20. And if a "fundie" now means a Christian belief in God, so be it. Posted by: Sandy P at July 30, 2004 10:50 AMBush wearing his religion on his sleeve is little different than Sullivian wearing his homosexuality on his. What's the big deal? Pray, blow, or get the hell out of the way. Posted by: Buster at July 30, 2004 11:47 AMAndrew has reduced his world view and the now tiny lens that both trumps and shapes his "principles" on any other unrelated issue is gay marriage. Nothing else really matters. He is a single issue voter. Kerry gets his support because Andrew knows Kerry will do nothing about his "oppostion". Posted by: Gary B at July 30, 2004 12:11 PM"He is a single issue voter." That's the bottom line. He's got a right to it, but anyone who takes his pronouncements on other issues seriously now that he's proven to be willing to re-write history to bolster his flight to Kerry over gay marriage is living in a fool's paradise. Do you people have your own fucking opinions or is your world just about Why Andrew Sullivan Is Wrong? Yeesh. Do we have to take a loyalty pledge before answering that? Posted by: P.A. Breault at July 30, 2004 12:26 PMIs Sully still pretending that he's not using gay marriage as his lens for Every Other Issue In The World? Posted by: Dave at July 30, 2004 10:54 PM"The damage that president Bush has done to the delicate but vital boundary between religion and politics is one reason I cannot support him for another term." I don't know Stephen, maybe he's not taking it all in one big shot but in tiny drops at a time. Maybe he's trying to develop an immunity to it, like Vizzinni's iocane powder. Posted by: Cara Remal at July 31, 2004 09:11 AMAs a non-American, could someone please tell me what KoolAid is and why drinking it is likened to doing something stupid or insane. I read this expression a lot and don't understand it. Where did it originate? Posted by: SF at July 31, 2004 09:24 AMThis should answer your question. http://www.raptureready.com/rr-kool-aid.html Personally, I find anyone who considers Bush to be a real conservative to be as much of a metaphorical Kool-Aid drinker as anyone who thinks Kerry will be a foreign policy hawk. Posted by: Eric at July 31, 2004 09:43 AMThanks, Eric! Don't drink the Kool-Aid!
