You may disagree with Dick Morris the pollster, Dick Morris the political consultant, and Dick Morris the human being. But there's a Dick Morris you might not know about -- Dick Morris, the staunch defender of English liberty:

I'd disagree with him on one point though: he says "the very weakness of the European Parliament is ... testimony to the scant value the EU places on democracy ... not permitted to introduce legislation ... only vote "yes" or "no" on the regulations proposed"
This isn't a failing, it's a benefit. Last thing we need is a bunch of euro-politicians thinking up laws to keep themselves busy and in the news.
What's needed is to clearly limit and define areas where the EU has any competence, and restrict the proposition of laws in such areas to votes of national delegations to the EU-Council (preferably with a rule of unanimity) and subject them to closer oversight by national legislatures.
Both EU-Parliament and EU-Commission should have minimal powers and be even more explicitly subordinate to the Council than they are now.
Though it wouldn't hurt if the Parliament kept the right to reject laws, come to think about it.
And to get such a confederal system, or react to a general continental desire to stay on the federalist path, the UK has to be clearly ready and willing to fold its hand and walk away.
This seems to be one of the few times Dicky is right.
I hope the other time Dicky is right is when he said Evita will never be pres.
