Be it in Lileks' layman terms, or the cold math of Wretchard's 2nd conjecture, this is where we are heading. The window of opportunity is closing; how slowly, no one will know until it is too late. Maybe a decade from now, maybe tomorrow.

Irradiate the Fifth Pillar (Column), jeesus. Probably wouldn't be a bad start if it ever gets that far. Hopefully it won't. hopefully

I just sent this off to Lileks:

If the local chapter of Jihad, Inc. obtains a nuke, and erases an American city, and the dishdashahs at corporate then try to play the "We got plenty more where that came from, baby!" card, do we start trading cities? At what point do we just say 'Screw it." and turn significant chunks of the Middle East into poor quality glass parking lots. If there is a point at which we decide that it's the lesser of multiple evils to level Jihadistan then it seems to me that doing so after the first incident would be the lowest cost option. If we're going to decide to utterly erase them after losing, say, 5 cities; how about we just go ahead after the first one and potentially save the other 4?

They may never love us, but they really do need to learn to fear us.

I wrote Lileks that we had a rather spirited discussion on this very subject, on this very site about a month ago. Just waiting for Old European to wiegh in to complete the circle.

Lileks is dead on. We need to put the "mutual" back into MAD. Simple foreign policy: you attack Chicago, Tehran is toast. You follow on with LA, adios Damascus. And we haven't even touched our modern arsenal.

Let the moderate on the Arab streets chew that over for a while. Maybe they will stop contemplating their collective navels and do a little regime change.

Let the Jihadis believe in the life after - let's focus on the Muslims who like staying alive to choke off these pigs.

The Left will call this "cowboy bravado", I call it going to the street fight with something other than a theory.

I had to look up "peroration" and "plinth."

JS: My thoughts exactly.

Acutally, you have MAD wrong. It isn't trade a city for a city. It's "you nuke our city, we destroy your entire country immidiately, no questions asked".

It is responding with overwhelming force.

Now, the hard part in this situation is figuring out who to destroy.

Posted by: Ceilig at May 12, 2004 12:11 PM

Ceilig,

Allow me to recommend a holy city or two in the Middle East as starting places.

I mean, afterall, if we're planning the end of the world, we might as well do it to achieve the maximum effect.

I do think that if we lose a city to jihadists, we are going to retaliate Big Time (tm) and that's enough Mutually Assured Destruction for me.

The problem, is how exactly to get that message out. Allow me to point you in the direction of Frank J., who has a wonderful plan he calls "Nuke The Moon." (I hear there is even a T-Shirt)
