Now Show Me Yours

Useless but fun. John Scalzi suggests taking your entire MP3 collection, loading it up in your jukebox software, hitting shuffle – then telling the world the first ten songs it lists. “Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard The next ten, just because nothing embarrassing came up, were: “Mama, Take Another Stand” by Ken Layne and the Corvids Not one Steely Dan or Sinatra tune out of 20? Doesn't MusicMatch know me at all? Comments
Green-Eyed Lady is a good one I haven't heard in ages! Posted by: Jay Solo at February 23, 2004 04:53 PMThis is out of a song list at work of only about 500 songs--a tiny portion of my overall collection, but all that I've got at work. Marvel Hill - Cardigans and one more for the road Citizen Erased (Live) - Muse Posted by: zombyboy at February 23, 2004 04:53 PM"Miinas Morgul" The Lord of the Rings, Return of the King "Counting Numbers" Hot Water Music "I Shall be Released" Nina Simone "Everything You've Done Wrong" Sloan "Lonesome valley" Joan Baez "Something in the Way" Nirvana "ABC" The Jackson Five "Devil in Jersey City" Coheed and Cambria "Roses from my Friends" Ben Harper "Boy and Girls" Good Charolette Do I get an award for most eclectic music tastes? Posted by: Sean Kirby at February 23, 2004 04:57 PMFrom 3318 songs: "The Thrill of it All," Roxy Music Sean, I think I might be giving you a run for your money. Also, nice to see the Supersuckers show up. Posted by: K.C. Lukens at February 23, 2004 05:16 PMRed Hot Chili Peppers-Californication Heh.. kinda cool idea. 1. Level 5 - King Crimson weirdly enough, the next two songs to play were Hm. I wonder who programmed my MP3 player?? From 2,654 songs: MTX - Swiss Army Girlfriend I did ten more after that and posted them at my site. Fun! Posted by: michele at February 23, 2004 05:32 PMAdam Ant tunes aren't embarassing? Posted by: denise at February 23, 2004 05:39 PMOoh fun! I want to play! From 2731 files: "Blips, Drips and Strips" - Stereolab Adam Ant tunes are never embarassing. (Neither are Corrosion of Conformity, but that's another question entirely.) Posted by: zombyboy at February 23, 2004 05:50 PMAdam Ant tunes are only embarassing if your'e caught singing them in the co-ed dorm shower. And that's only if you were singing them so loudly that you failed to notice folks stealing your towel. Other than that, fair play. Posted by: K.C. Lukens at February 23, 2004 05:58 PMFuct Up Kid - Mest I'm shocked that none of my immense collection of cover tunes by the punk group "Me First & the Gimme Gimmes" came up and no Gregorian chants made the cut. I was also slightly relieved that none of my collection of German military marches from WWII showed up! Listening to my full library on shuffle would probably drive even me insane... Posted by: Gregory Markle at February 23, 2004 06:07 PM5300 songs Blasphemous Rumors - Depeche Mode It's so interesting to see other people's playlists. CoC is not now, nor will ever be embarassing to listen to. Adam Ant is only embarassing when you find out that he is into saving gorillas now and has reworked "Stand or Deliver" to "Save the Gorillas." Gregory, happy to find another Mest fan. My eleven year old son turned me onto them. Go figure. Posted by: michele at February 23, 2004 06:35 PMRockinest Cat In Town - Hillbilly Hellcats That's probably the most country-free string of ten songs to come out of this thing for a while. Posted by: Matt Navarre at February 23, 2004 06:45 PMHell, I'm game.....2308-song collection: 1. Grateful Dead - Death Don't Have No Mercy That was fun! Posted by: Timbeaux at February 23, 2004 07:00 PM3237 songs and somehow Winamp manages to pick two songs off the same album... But, I'm living by the rules, so here goes: On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Propellerheads Amazingly, none of the groups that are way overrepresented in my CD collection (do I really have 132 Oingo Boingo songs??? and another 93 New Order tracks?) show up in the list - didn't make the top 20 either. Posted by: Brian Erst at February 23, 2004 07:12 PMI got a Sinatra song eventually but I had to run a second ten to get it. Rock and Roll Suicide - David Bowie Second ten Maneater - Hall and Oates Out of 2436 tracks in my partial playlist (there's about 1,000 more on another harddrive that I don't have access to at the moment): Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Dark Slumber
1. "Here's a Health to the Company" - The Chieftans 1666 tracks, but I only have about 1/3rd of my CD's ripped. Posted by: lpdbw at February 23, 2004 07:25 PMSean asks: Do I get an award for most eclectic music tastes? Not even close. Not even close dude. I'll walk the Line- Johnny Cash * This is the song the British Army played as Cornwallis signed the surrender to George Washington. The tradition at the time was that the winning general would tell the losing army want he wanted them to play. The Brits were so appalled that the lowly colonists won, they played "The World Turned Upside Down" as a protest. ** This was actually the first "rap" song to hit the charts. Although back then white performers called it the talking blues and did not wear any bling bling. it was a 50's protest song 10 years before protest songs really became mainstream. *** Song written by the colonists after the Battle of Bunker (Breeds) Hill to celebrate their "loss" to the British. Great song if you ever get a chance to hear it. **** Civil War song sung by Georgia Militia. (goober peas are peanuts) weird song. I have over 500 gigabytes (yes GB) of music and this was actually a pretty good representation of what I listen to. 10 songs with from 6 different centuries with a tilt toward historical music. That's about right. Posted by: Paul at February 23, 2004 07:40 PMPaul - If you think "Goober Peas" is a weird song, what's even weirder is that I grew up singing that song and as far as I can tell, not a single relative on any side of my family had ever been south of Chicago, Illinois. Most of the family hadn't even been in the country at the time of the Civil War and those few who had lived in the Dakota territory at the time, having moved there from England and Ireland. Peas, peas, peas, peas - eatin' goober peas... This might explain my love of peanut butter... 7436 songs... artist / song / album or show 1. Led Zeppelin - "Going Down South" - Live 6.27.77 (Farewell To LA) "Goober Peas" was done by the Kingston Trio - (at any rate, that's where I learned it). They appear to have been somewhat popular in the 1950's. That might explain things. Posted by: Ian Argent at February 23, 2004 10:27 PMOnly 1187 songs, poor me. 1. Queen - I'm Going Slightly Mad Covers most of the major genres of my music, at least. Posted by: Tom at February 24, 2004 01:05 AMFrom my "standard" playlist of 1508 songs, as transferred to my work notebook and randomized by XMMS: 1. "Call And Answer," Bare Naked Ladies (My playlist is heavily weighted towards 70's and 80's songs with a healthy dose of comedy.) Posted by: Erbo at February 24, 2004 09:32 AMHow come no Beach Boys? "California Girls" still makes me cry. Posted by: erp at February 24, 2004 10:01 AMKC Lukens: 'j ever notice the melodic similarities between the first movement theme of the Rach 3 and that of "Duel of the Fates" by John Williams? I'm just sayin', is all... Posted by: Brian Swisher at February 24, 2004 10:11 AM
1. Chemical Brothers - block rockin beats Interesting. no metallica? i got a TON of those. I've got a bunch of Beach Boys in there, they just didn't come up in that run. I enjoy their cover of "California Dreamin'," featuring Roger McGuinn on 12-string guitar.... And it's a shame that no Marillion came up in my first ten either. (Though "Freaks" was #11, as I recall.) Posted by: Erbo at February 25, 2004 10:25 AMThe Blow Monkeys - Sweet Murder That was fun. I only have about 1700 tracks, about a quarter of which are Zeppelin, Floyd and Santana. I make a lot of mix CDs for my local pub, which explains a couple of the more poppy tracks up there. Posted by: David Gillies at February 25, 2004 01:32 PMHere's the first 10 random tracks that came up from my stuff. About 3500 songs to pick from. "Sex Type Thing" - Stone Temple Pilots And the next 10 just for fun: "Blue Skies" - Willie Nelson I don't listen to all of this on a regular basis, but I do still own all of it. Suprised no Black Sabbath showed up though. :) Posted by: Garrett at March 1, 2004 10:39 PM |
