Posted by Stephen Green  ·  23 February 2004

Useless but fun. John Scalzi suggests taking your entire MP3 collection, loading it up in your jukebox software, hitting shuffle – then telling the world the first ten songs it lists.

Mine are:

“Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard
“Desperate But Not Serious” by Adam Ant
“I Guess I’ll Have To Change My Plan” by Tony Bennett
“No Riders” by Shannon Curfman
“Deep Ocean, Vast Sea” by Peter Murphy
“Cat People (Putting Out The Fire)” by David Bowie
“I Feel For You” by Chaka Khan
“Never Enough [Big Mix]” by The Cure
“Green-Eyed Lady” by Sugarloaf
“Moonlight Drive” by The Doors

The next ten, just because nothing embarrassing came up, were:

“Mama, Take Another Stand” by Ken Layne and the Corvids
“This Masquerade” by Carmen McRae
“Slap and Tickle” by Squeeze
“Been Caught Stealin’” by Jane’s Addiction
“Weasel And The White Boys Cool” by Rickie Lee Jones
“Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 2” performed by Vladimir Horowitz
“Gimme Little Sign” by Brenton Wood
“Kids In America” by Kim Wilde
“Lisa, Listen To Me” by Blood, Sweat & Tears
“Ask Me ’Bout Nothin’ (But The Blues)” by Boz Scaggs

Not one Steely Dan or Sinatra tune out of 20? Doesn't MusicMatch know me at all?

Comments

Green-Eyed Lady is a good one I haven't heard in ages!

Sean, I think I might be giving you a run for your money. Also, nice to see the Supersuckers show up.

Adam Ant tunes aren't embarassing?

Posted by: Matt at February 23, 2004 05:49 PM

Adam Ant tunes are never embarassing.

(Neither are Corrosion of Conformity, but that's another question entirely.)

Posted by: zombyboy at February 23, 2004 05:50 PM

Adam Ant tunes are only embarassing if your'e caught singing them in the co-ed dorm shower. And that's only if you were singing them so loudly that you failed to notice folks stealing your towel. Other than that, fair play.

Posted by: K.C. Lukens at February 23, 2004 05:58 PM

Fuct Up Kid - Mest
I Was Wrong - Social Distortion
Bloody Well Right - Supertramp
Pablo Picasso - Burning Sensations
Good Day Sunshine - The Beatles
I Hardly Ever Sing Beer Drinking Songs - Johnny Cash
Symphony No. 40 - Mozart
Pepper - Butthole Surfers
The Raven - Alan Parsons Project
Preachin' Blues - Robert Johnson

I'm shocked that none of my immense collection of cover tunes by the punk group "Me First & the Gimme Gimmes" came up and no Gregorian chants made the cut. I was also slightly relieved that none of my collection of German military marches from WWII showed up! Listening to my full library on shuffle would probably drive even me insane...

Posted by: Gregory Markle at February 23, 2004 06:07 PM

5300 songs

Blasphemous Rumors - Depeche Mode
Mustang Sally - Andrew Strong
Strawberryfire - Apples in Stereo
Love in an Elevator - Aerosmith
King of Stone - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
How You Remind Me - Nickelback

Childbirth - Robin Williams
Blue Hat for a Blue Day - Nick Heyward and Haircut 100
These Boots Are Made for Walking - Nancy Sinatra

Posted by: Tom at February 23, 2004 06:18 PM

It's so interesting to see other people's playlists.

CoC is not now, nor will ever be embarassing to listen to.

Adam Ant is only embarassing when you find out that he is into saving gorillas now and has reworked "Stand or Deliver" to "Save the Gorillas."

Gregory, happy to find another Mest fan. My eleven year old son turned me onto them. Go figure.

Posted by: michele at February 23, 2004 06:35 PM

Rockinest Cat In Town - Hillbilly Hellcats
Rudie Can't Fail - The Clash
Touch And Go - Stiff Little Fingers
Your Love Belongs Under A Rock - The Dirtbombs
Motorhead - Motorhead
When Will We Be Married - The Waterboys
Cool Manchu - Supersuckers
Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello
Why Is It Always This Way - The Ramones
I'd Follow You Anywhere - The Derailers

That's probably the most country-free string of ten songs to come out of this thing for a while.

Posted by: Matt Navarre at February 23, 2004 06:45 PM

Hell, I'm game.....2308-song collection:

1. Grateful Dead - Death Don't Have No Mercy

8. Lenny Kravitz - Heaven Help
9. Johnny Cash - Hung My Head
10. Jim Croce - A Long Time Ago

That was fun!

Posted by: Timbeaux at February 23, 2004 07:00 PM

3237 songs and somehow Winamp manages to pick two songs off the same album... But, I'm living by the rules, so here goes:

On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Propellerheads
Tubular Bells (Pretty Boy and Pretty Girls Mix) - Book of Love
Free Radio Africa - Die Warzau
Bond - 808 State
Love's Secret Domain - Coil
Fishing - Public Image Limited
World in My Eyes - Depeche Mode
Church - Outkast
Fizzing Human Bomb - Danielle Dax
The Snow - Coil

Amazingly, none of the groups that are way overrepresented in my CD collection (do I really have 132 Oingo Boingo songs??? and another 93 New Order tracks?) show up in the list - didn't make the top 20 either.

Posted by: Brian Erst at February 23, 2004 07:12 PM

I got a Sinatra song eventually but I had to run a second ten to get it.

Rock and Roll Suicide - David Bowie
Under Pressure - David Bowie and Queen
In the Getto - Elvis Presley
You'll be in my Heart - Phil Collins
I Dreamed Last Night - Justin Hayward and John Lodge
Operator (Live - Final Tour) - Jim Croce
Whatever Gets you Through the Night - John Lennon
Help Me Through the Night - Joe Walsh
Expecting to Fly - Buffalo Springfield
Lather - Jefferson Airplane

Second ten

Maneater - Hall and Oates

Honky Cat - Elton John

Hooked on a Feeling - B.J. Thomas
Yellow Submarine - The Beatles

Posted by: Starhawk at February 23, 2004 07:23 PM

Out of 2436 tracks in my partial playlist (there's about 1,000 more on another harddrive that I don't have access to at the moment):

Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Dark Slumber
mdfmk - Be Like Me
Cowboy Bepop - Cats on Mars
Emily Bindiger - Adieu
Stone Temple Pilots - Creep
Spin Doctors - Rosetta Stone
Rammstein - Asche Zu Asche
Do As Infinity - Yesterday & Today [Strings Orchestral Mix]
L5 - Aime
Duke Ellington - I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good

Interesting tidbit about the first random track, I submitted the information for the album that track is on to cddb. It's an imported Japanese album and I had to translate the track names, which was not at all easy since I do not know Japanese!

Posted by: Robin Goodfellow at February 23, 2004 07:23 PM

1. "Here's a Health to the Company" - The Chieftans
2. "Roller Derby Queen" by Jim Croce
3. "[Untitled]" by Michelle Shocked
4. "Liebestraum NO. 3" by Django Reinhardt
5. "April in Portugal" by Chet Atkins
6. "You Don't Drink What I Drink" by Smokey Wilson
7. "Mama Talk to Your Daughter" by J.B. Lenoir
8. "Yakety Axe" by Chet Atkins
9. "It's Too Late Brother" by Little Walter
10. "You Will Need Me" by Lonnie Johnson.

1666 tracks, but I only have about 1/3rd of my CD's ripped.

Sean asks: Do I get an award for most eclectic music tastes?

Not even close. Not even close dude.

I'll walk the Line- Johnny Cash
The Christmas Song- Nat King Cole
BlueBerry Hill- Fats Domino
World Turned Upside down.*
Talking Atomic Blues**
Magic Flute - Motzart
That’s The Way (I Like It) - KC and the Sunshine Band. (ouch that hurt to admit)
Jenny Says - Cowboy Mouth
Crazy in Love -  Beyonce'
Battle Of Bunker Hill ***
Goober Peas****

* This is the song the British Army played as Cornwallis signed the surrender to George Washington. The tradition at the time was that the winning general would tell the losing army want he wanted them to play. The Brits were so appalled that the lowly colonists won, they played "The World Turned Upside Down" as a protest.

** This was actually the first "rap" song to hit the charts. Although back then white performers called it the talking blues and did not wear any bling bling. it was a 50's protest song 10 years before protest songs really became mainstream.

*** Song written by the colonists after the Battle of Bunker (Breeds) Hill to celebrate their "loss" to the British. Great song if you ever get a chance to hear it.

**** Civil War song sung by Georgia Militia. (goober peas are peanuts) weird song.

I have over 500 gigabytes (yes GB) of music and this was actually a pretty good representation of what I listen to. 10 songs with from 6 different centuries with a tilt toward historical music. That's about right.

Posted by: Paul at February 23, 2004 07:40 PM

Paul -

If you think "Goober Peas" is a weird song, what's even weirder is that I grew up singing that song and as far as I can tell, not a single relative on any side of my family had ever been south of Chicago, Illinois. Most of the family hadn't even been in the country at the time of the Civil War and those few who had lived in the Dakota territory at the time, having moved there from England and Ireland.

Peas, peas, peas, peas - eatin' goober peas...
Goodness how delicious, eatin' goober peas!

This might explain my love of peanut butter...

Posted by: Clay Ranck at February 23, 2004 09:00 PM

"Goober Peas" was done by the Kingston Trio - (at any rate, that's where I learned it). They appear to have been somewhat popular in the 1950's. That might explain things.

Posted by: Ian Argent at February 23, 2004 10:27 PM

Only 1187 songs, poor me.

1. Queen - I'm Going Slightly Mad
2. Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song
3. Toby Keith - Courtesy of the Red White & Blue
4. London Symphony Orchesta - Sith Spacecraft/The Droid Battle (SW:TPM soundtrack)

7. The Beatles - Yellow Submarine
8. The Rolling Stones - Midnight Rambler
9. Cleveland Symphony Orchesta - Finlandia op. 26
10. Pink Floyd - Wearing the Inside Out

Covers most of the major genres of my music, at least.

Posted by: Tom at February 24, 2004 01:05 AM

From my "standard" playlist of 1508 songs, as transferred to my work notebook and randomized by XMMS:

1. "Call And Answer," Bare Naked Ladies
2. "Joey," Concrete Blonde
3. "The Fanatic," Felony
4. "La Isla Bonita," Madonna

7. "Witchy Woman," The Eagles
8. "Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting," Elton John
9. "Some Like It Hot," Power Station
10. "Trigger Happy," "Weird Al" Yankovic

(My playlist is heavily weighted towards 70's and 80's songs with a healthy dose of comedy.)

How come no Beach Boys? "California Girls" still makes me cry.

10. Orbital - pac man theme (techno remix)

Interesting. no metallica? i got a TON of those.

Posted by: mayor jimmy at February 24, 2004 09:28 PM

I've got a bunch of Beach Boys in there, they just didn't come up in that run. I enjoy their cover of "California Dreamin'," featuring Roger McGuinn on 12-string guitar....

And it's a shame that no Marillion came up in my first ten either. (Though "Freaks" was #11, as I recall.)

Posted by: Erbo at February 25, 2004 10:25 AM

The Blow Monkeys - Sweet Murder
The Guess Who - American Woman
The La's - There She Goes
Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song
Cream - White Room
The Beatles - Ob-la-di, ob-la-da
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Squeeze - Up The Junction
Duran Duran - The Reflex

That was fun. I only have about 1700 tracks, about a quarter of which are Zeppelin, Floyd and Santana. I make a lot of mix CDs for my local pub, which explains a couple of the more poppy tracks up there.

Posted by: David Gillies at February 25, 2004 01:32 PM

Here's the first 10 random tracks that came up from my stuff. About 3500 songs to pick from.

"Sex Type Thing" - Stone Temple Pilots
"Crossfire" - Stevie Ray Vaughan
"Texas Women" - Hank Williams Jr.
"My Way Down" - Chris Duarte Group
"Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" - Willie Nelson
"Five Pound Bass" - Robert Earl Keen Jr.
"Mary Jane" - Alanis Morrisette
"Everything" - Collective Soul
"Sonata In F Minor, Op. 120" - Brahms
"No Attention" - Soundgarden

And the next 10 just for fun:

"Blue Skies" - Willie Nelson
"Apostrophe" - Frank Zappa
Twisting By The Pool" - Dire Straits
"Kresleriana, Op. 16: 7" - Shumann
"Kiko and The Lavender Moon" - Los Lobos
"A Walk On The Wild Side Of Life" - David Ball
"No Woman No Cry" - Bob Marley and the Wailers
"Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day" - Jethro Tull
"I Got What It Takes" - Catherine Denise(local blues musician)
"Move Over" - Steppenwolf

I don't listen to all of this on a regular basis, but I do still own all of it. Suprised no Black Sabbath showed up though. :)
