What Tax Cut?
Posted by Stephen Green  ·  18 February 2004

This I year I figured I'd do our taxes myself. I had the paperwork, I had the software -- how hard could it be?

OK, maybe I didn't have all the paperwork -- turns out Melissa's college tuition last year was deductable. And I didn't think to keep our auto licensing fee papers.

No biggie -- I've got guestimates on those, so I can always dig up the records later. Meantime, I'd at least get a clue on the size of our refund. Last year we'd had to pay up two or three hundred bucks in state and federal taxes, which to me is perfect. A refund, after all, is the repayment on an interest-free loan to the government. And 300 dollars isn't a big enough hit to ding the grocery budget in April.

All told, 2002 was a good tax year. Well, as good as any year can be for taxes.

Last year, we made a little more money, and withholding went up to match. Only difference between 2002 and 2003 was, now we had a nice, fat mortgage deduction (I'd owned the old VodkaCondo outright).

So a $300 Amount Owed from last year should have turned into a refund big enough for a nice dinner out.

TaxCut instead tells me we need to pony up about $1,600.

I think maybe we need to see an accountant, after all.

Comments

Maybe this will piss you off, but I just did my taxes. I came up with nearly $4k back, state and federal, due mostly to the child care credits. As I use this to pay off some credit card debt, I thank GWB and the R's on the Hill for helping me to lower the debt rate in this country.

I think you need to see an accountant. My year over year earnings were almost identical and I ended up a good bit ahead of where I was last year.

We're getting our tails kicked on next year's taxes--my withholding went up by hundreds a month.

Trust me, the marriage penalty still exists...

Kids - Vodka - GET TO WORK!

And did you fund your IRA or SEP?

Posted by: Sandy P. at February 18, 2004 01:19 PM

What I do is I get the tax prep software and do as much as I can myself. Then I take the almost completed forms to the accountant with all the paperwork, and he/she finds all the loopholes that I didn't and figures stuff like depreciation that I have trouble calculating.

That way it's cheaper than if the accountant started from scratch.

yeah, steve, stop what you're doing and go molest the wife...

you need a little un by december 29th (to be safe) so she needs to be preggers in the next few weeks (you have a a little more time if you have a doc who'll do a c-section a bit early and is willing to work over or around the holidays. its all about tax planning for next year!

have fun "tax planning"

and yeah, see an accountant

As a vodka proponent do you get to deduct your liquor purchases and weblogging expenses?

Making less money and getting SLAMMED with the *()&)(&^(^&*%(^*% Self-Employment Tax.

How about i take that half of Soc Sec the the employer used to pay and put it in my very own IRA. I promise never to use it when I grow old. Since I probably won't retire for 30+ years, I think that's a much better deal for me.

Someone blogged that Cash&Kerry said he'd raise tax on small biz to 45%?????? Is this true????

Posted by: Sandy P. at February 18, 2004 03:51 PM

Sandy, that's so ridiculous, it's probably true. I'd like to know.

Found this so far and sent you an email:

From Americans for tax reform:

All of the major Democratic presidential candidates are proposing to repeal some or all of President Bush's landmark tax relief legislation. Those candidates who propose to repeal only some plan to return the top marginal rate to 38.6% or higher. Therefore, all of the major Democratic presidential candidates advocate at least a 10% increase in the top marginal tax rate, from 35% to 38.6%. The candidates call these tax increases for the rich, but since more than two-thirds of top bracket filers are small business owners, they are really proposing to hike the Small Business Tax. 1
