Don't Forget the Burritos
Posted by Stephen Green  ·  30 December 2003

Blackfive, the "Paratrooper of Love," has some advice for avoiding that New Year's Day hangover:

Water will not help you. Many hangover cures claim that drinking water will cut the pain and agony of a dehydration headache resulting from drinking heavily. Now, I want you people to repeat these words: Water is for washing, booze is for drinking. Say it over and over again until it is ingrained in your memory. If someone offers you water, tell them you are thirsty, not dirty.

So far, so good. But what's this third item about?

There are those blasphemers that believe that Cogeners are the cause. Evidently, cogeners are darker in color and, therefore, are found in darker beverages like scotch, whiskey, and rum. I have found that this "discovery" was fabricated by the Russian mafia in an effort to promote vodka as the drink of choice. This is obviously false as I have personally experienced more excruciating mornings as the result of vodka than scotch.

There's room in any healthy diet for vodka and scotch. Can't we all just get along -- or at least a drink?

McDonald's Big Mac and a BFC (Big F*ckin' Coke). Works every time to cure a hangover.

I also forgot to mention Gyros...which, in my house, is a sleep-on-the-couch offense...

Thanks for the link.

My experience tells me that if you plan on overdrinking, stay away from clear liquors. Stick with a dark rum.

A huge, greasy burger from the diner the next morning works miracles.

Garoraide works for me. Close to water, but seems to do the trick. That and a LOT of Advil.

It's "congeners," and in my experience the less of them the better. I prefer Skyy vodka, which is specially distilled to get rid of them.

THE worst hangover I ever had was a young and stupid MP sitting down and knocking off a fifth of scotch all by my lonesome.

I was sick for three days.

It took a trip to Scotland to rekindle my love of good whiskey.

My contribution:
To resolve the hangover takes two mere steps.
!. Take a nice healthy crap.
2. A bowl of fresh menudo.

All of the above suggestions have merit, but to *prevent* the hangover in the first place this product is amazing:

www.doublechaser.com/default.htm

If you can't find them, two activated charcoal capsules (natural food store) and 1 extra strength tums every 3-4 hours of drinking has the same effect.

I've tried both of the above with a wide variety (and quantities) of liquors and have awoken without a trace of a hangover every time.

Two tacos. Beef Fajitas, beans, cheese and rice therein.

Cures what ails ya.

Chili Cheese Burrito, Taco Supremes and a Dew. or

Jalepino White Casltes, chicken rings, and a coke. or

Coneys no onions, Saganaki, and a chocolate milk (maybe a Gyro too).

Water is good if you wake up during the night, not while you're still drunk.

Never underestimate a couple of B-12 or B-50 tablets before bed, and again first thing in the morning.
ALSO,
Remember that New Years Eve is for amateurs; professionals drink like that any time,
AND,
Never forget that you don't HAVE to drink the whole world under the table. Moderation in all things.

Never forget that you don't HAVE to drink the whole world under the table.

Whoa whoa, back up the truck. When did this happen?

All I know is: Gin is evil.

As for vodka-related hangovers... a "night cap" consisting of a large regular Coke and anything greasy (preferably leftover Beef Wellington since I'm a snob) is good.

As to the rest, I plead the Twinkie defense.

Ah, Kate, there is nothing better in the summer (or year-round as you get to enjoy) than a Bombay Saphire Gin Martini - "up with olive, please". Mmmmm.

As for the Double Chaser, I just read an article in the Chicago Tribune about the results of testing of the DC, and it supposedly works (according to the U of Chicago).

Posted by: Blackfive at December 31, 2003 12:51 AM

Mmmm...Sapphire Gin Martini....mmmmm. Can I start drinking now?

Remember to avoid Tylenol (and its generic forms) while drinking - LIVER DAMAGE (and not the good kind--er if there is a good kind).

Fruit juice. I do still believe in the dehydration theory, though beyond a certain point these are toxins in the blood. As I understand it, the nasty stuff turns into a formaldehyde-like substance the next day.

I don't believe any of this hoo-ha about the color of booze affecting the hangover. Hangovers seem to come from drinking too much . . . or did I miss something?
