It's ironic. It seems virtually anyone can tell a better Star Wars story than George Lucas. I recently read the Heir to the Empire trilogy by Timothy Zahn. While not perfect, they would have made a much better movie trilogy than the prequals have.
The tale of Anakin Skywalker's fall and the rise of Darth Vader could have been so monumentally cool. When I think of how Lucas has managed to fuck up the Star Wars mythos, I just wanna bitch slap the man.
It's a bloody crime, what Lucas has done. Too bad he didn't just write a general plot-line, let decent writers take over, and get decent directors to direct. The whole thing would've been so much better.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy turned out to be the ulitmate promise in geek movies. If The Return of the King (the only movie I am looking forward to seeing) is at least as good as the last two, we'll have a geek epic for the ages.
I just hope the same team makes "The Hobbit" as well, just to finish the whole thing.
