Progress Report
Posted by Stephen Green · 25 July 2003
This short letter just got sent off: Dear Mr. Workman, Signed, etc. Readers might be interested to know that Ultimate Electronics (who also operates SoundTrack stores) has an amazing array of high-end A/V products, some of the finest salespeople I've ever dealt with, and service and repairs departments slightly less concerned with your satisfaction than a drunk Soviet DMV clerk two minutes before closing. "...slightly less concerned with your satisfaction than a drunk Soviet DMV clerk two minutes before closing..." Sorry to inform you, my friend, but that's an American Tradition. Posted by: Kathy K at July 25, 2003 06:08 PMOoops. Sorry we haven't been much help so far - the layoff kind of threw our priorities for a loop (and I hope to do some networking via our contact there, and that complicates things too, and yada yada yada - ok we suck). Posted by: andy at July 25, 2003 06:48 PMSteve, letters are too easily discarded or ignored. The key to getting action is to find someone you can actually get on the phone, perhaps Mr. Workman's executive assistant, and convince them that they will not be able to get any work done at all until until you are made happy, because you have decided that your life's goal is consume as much of Ultimate Electronics' resources as humanly possible. One need not be profane, but one must let them know that you are so angry that inflicting cost on Ultimate Electronics well in excess of what you have spent on the item in question is the only goal that now matters in your life. In short, you must adopt Nixon and Kissinger's mad man theory of negotiation. I once told a car dealer that I would consume $50,000 of his resources so quick that it would make his head swim, and explicitly detailed how I would do so, regardless of cost to me, because nothing in my life mattered any more. I got a new car. The key is maintaining a credible threat, which means that you must appear to have become so rightfully, totally, possessed of a calm, yet irrational, rage (I know it sounds contradictory, but the insane often are, after all) that ever fiber of your being is concerned with nothing more than getting even. When faced with such a person, people's whose livelihood depends on being able to function at their job without dealing with you for the rest of their professional lives will usually get something done to satisfy you. Posted by: Will Allen at July 26, 2003 02:16 PMahhh... isn't that act above conversion of private property??? especially seeing as how they're doing this for commercial purposes? can we do a class action suit? i'll contact the volokhs and see... getting a future supreme court justice on his case might scare the hell out of above leftist idiot.. and if not, we can at least bankrupt him and sell him into slavery in bhutan Posted by: hey at July 26, 2003 03:25 PMFor those who might not be able to add, Ultimate also owns Minnesota's "Audio King" brand of stores. I went in with cash money one day. I wanted a DVD changer and a home-theater-in-a-box. Not enough cash to componentize right away, and I wanted something, so a box system it was. I was walking out the store before someone asked me if they could help me. I walked around for almost 30 minutes, even past where the sales guys were sitting around bullshitting and didn't get asked for help. I was going to go to Circuit City, until a guy coming in the door asked me if I had been helped. Their service has gone downhill from when I got my TV and VCR there in '95. Bully for you, I hope you get some response from these folks. Stephen, I've heard a few horror stories about Soundtrack. My Front Range home theater needs are filled by Listen Up (http://www.listenup.com). Although I'm now in Denver, I used to live down in the Springs, and had wonderful experiences with their store down there. Posted by: w0zz at July 26, 2003 10:57 PMprevious comments referenced a troll/ad for stolen something or other (not going to help drive traffic to him by giving the whole domain) my derogatory comments about the poster above me no longer apply, since the troll post was removed. the aspersions are definitely not intended for will allen, who is both a gentleman and a scholar and is not, according to my information, a leftist idiot best of luck with bbb and getting the home theater all spruced up Posted by: hey at July 27, 2003 07:35 PMIf you actually manage to get into a dialog with this clown, you might want to point out how many hits you get each day, and how easy it would be to put a link to the whole story right at the top of your main page. Posted by: Gary Utter at July 28, 2003 02:48 PMMy brother lives in Denver and traffics in high-end home theater and home automation equipment. He's a wholesaler/factory rep, though. I'll ask him if there's anyone in the area he'd recommend. I sent him your first letter to Workman just now, as an example of how not to do customer service. He deals in pretty serious stuff, though.
