Spiked Story
Posted by Stephen Green · 18 June 2003
Admittedly, I've been out of the loop for a few weeks, so maybe I missed a bunch of stuff. But going over the front pages of the web editions of various major newspapers this evening, I haven't seen a single story about Iran. Not even one in the Los Angeles Times, the biggest paper in the US city with (if memory serves; better ask Pejman) the largest expat Iranian community in the US. Nothing at the Washington Post or the New York Times, either. I'd check WSJ, but I keep forgetting to renew my subscription. Am I missing something here, or are they? Comments
I agree that there is less coverage about Iran than is desirable. Much less. Of course, it would help if the Bush Administration made more of a public issue about the protests there. And yes, LA has the largest expat Iranian community. Makes the silence of the L.A. Times all the more damning, doesn't it? Oh, and welcome back. You were missed. Posted by: Pejman Yousefzadeh at June 18, 2003 01:08 AMNo. You're not missing anything. It's just Today's paper had a long article about 150 Iranian "terrorists" arrested in la Belle. These are the people who are trying to oust the current theocracy in Iran, not the real terrorists, Hamas, who are being protected in the land of the frogs. Our liberal media completely sympathizes with this position. Quel Horreur! It may be hopeful that the US Press has yet Seconds on the "Welcome Back". The NYT has had some stories on the Iranian situation, though nothing since Monday. (Not from Iran proper, anyway. They've covered the French crackdown.) They say that they have a reporter in Teheran, but you know what that's worth. All I see from the Post is a report on Powell backing the protests in a mealy-mouthed kind of way. I think there's a quota system. They'll only report so much from Iran, and they're concentrating on the nuclear stuff. Yes, it's stupid. On the other hand, the British and EU media seem to be reporting everything. Posted by: Mac Thomason at June 18, 2003 09:35 AMYou're more apt to see a story on what is going wrong in Iraq & Afghanistan, but nobody is making noise about what is going on in-between in Iran. Where's the crys of the human-rights groups? Too busy whining about the fact that detainees in Guantanamo are being treated like, GASP, prisoners of all things. Posted by: Scof at June 18, 2003 09:48 AMOh and nice to see you back. Posted by: Scof at June 18, 2003 09:49 AMThe Daily Show on Comedy Central opened last night's (or maybe it was Monday's) show with humor about the Iran protests (and footage of the demonstrators). Bizarre thing is that I think that's more coverage on a comedy show than on the real networks. They're too obsessed with idiocy like the Laci Peterson case (which The Daily Show has blessedly avoided). Posted by: Brent M Krupp at June 18, 2003 10:06 AMCBS has had an Iran story for 3 or 4 days in a row now. NBC had 2 last week with one as the second story of the broadcast. FOX has had one every day since the demonstrations started and even went pretty in depth 2 days ago with Ledeen as a guest on Brit Hume. It has a ways to go but it is getting a lot more attention then previous times. The newspapers (as always) are a joke. Posted by: BJW at June 18, 2003 11:17 AMUm...Actually the LA Times had a frontpage story on the matter. http://www.latimes.com/la-fg-iran17jun17,1,4422524.story And, yais, we do have the largest expate Iranian community but its not really right to say that they live in LA. The vast majority live in the San Fernando Valley(mostly Encino and Tarzana) and Beverly Hills which is its own city. And its really not fair to classify the San Fernando Valley as a real part of LA, that why papers like the LA Times have a special Valley Edition which us valley residents get, in that Valley Edition the Iranian community gets a good deal of ink. And thats ignoring the front page treatment the particular story on the Mullahs got. Posted by: Lion at June 18, 2003 02:31 PMSince neither Reagan or either Bush ever funded or otherwise supported the Mullahs, there's no opportunity for the blame-america-first liberal to use Iran as a stick to beat the Conservatives with. Also, this band of evildoers came to power under the sainted Jimmy Carter's watch, and the libs don't want to draw any more attention to his failures. Posted by: MarkD at June 18, 2003 07:24 PMIn reading this (and your post re Iran a few days ago - "If it continues, expect bloodshed"), I'm reminded of Tian an Mien Square. I'd like to think Iran will be like Poland, Russia, et al, rather than China, but I am not optimistic. The mullahs have too much at stake to willingly give up power. |
