No jokes here, but whatever happened to claims made on various Websites a few weeks/months ago that France had obtained a 7-year exemption for itself from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court? Did these claims actually have merit or were they apocryphal?

Let's hope that Chirac's current mandate may permit the French to focus on their own self-interests as DeGaulle perported to do. We'd be better of with considered self-interst as their dominant motif than the warmed over, reflexive anti-American remnant of Communist ideology that has recently governed French politics.

But for today at least, vive le Republic.

I hope they don't think this makes them even with us for liberating Europe. We'll never hear the end of it.
